As an 02 owner, I’m currently using Dino fluid and have been wanting to switch to synth, just haven’t yet because it runs so smoothly...at 160k. PS: External cooler installed.
Redline D4 or Amsoil ATF. Is the cooler installed as bypass or in series? Depending on your climate bypassing can make the trans take longer to warm up.

@Rancho5 if you want a cheaper alternative than redline or amsoil I'd suggest Valvline Maxlife. A lot of guys use it and it works for me. Also use that oil ever since I've owned the truck and my oil is very yellow still at 3k vs when I first got the truck it was very black. Just throwing that out there.

Looks like he's in New Mexico, so bypassing altogether should be fine. Most cooler manufacturers will include a note about those living in climates that see temps below freezing on a regular basis to not bypass the stock cooler, so I think he's good. I also have it bypassed but we only see below freezing at night, about 10 nights a year so it heats up pretty quick.

That's the engine oil. The ATF was good but they reformulated it to meet Toyota WS. As a result it is thinner. I had hard shifts using it after. Not my first recommendation anymore. Combining it with a bottle of Lucas stop slip would help thicken it for an already dying transmission, but should only be used for that purpose anyway.

I'd recommend spending more up front for the best ATF. Had many transmission builders and re-builders agree with this as well.

Since I’ve got Redline everywhere else, D4 it is. Any idea how much it takes? I’ve got the tranny cooler everyone recommends. Can’t think of the name here at work.

Generally it is a gallon when you drain it. Last time I got 4.5 quart though. Still haven't added that half quart...

UPDATE: Shes still running. I did need to replace the trans filter again, trans pump was starved on cold starts with colder temps leading into the winter, magnets had more debris on them however no large metal shavings still. Still running Valvoline maxlife, upgraded to 33 inch tires with stock 4.10 gearing, submitting my trans to more abuse than ever and I have no issues to report. Except that this spring im doing a manual swap HAHA

Honestly theyre "lifetime filters" but I wouldnt hesitate to just go ahead and change out the trans filter ever 40k miles and keep your fluid good and youll be fine. Its easy to prevent tragedies, hard to remedy them. I am still using this trans though. Ran it harder than ever this past summer at the dunes.
