Train horns... anybody run them?

Heard a set today and figured it was some big ass F950(joking) P/U. It turns out it was a 3G runner... I was wondering if anyone here has them and where did you find the room?

I used to think that train horns were silly on anything other than a TRAIN.
but i kind of like the idea...

I've seen guys mount them under the truck where their spare would normally go. Air is usually the issue with them. Multiple trumpets take a lot of air. I've seen guys mount pancake compressors in their toolbox and power them with large inverters, even plumbing an additional air tank into the mix. This was all when I had my diesel dually.

I ended up going with a smaller setup off of the shelf at oreillys, it had 2 trumpets and a small air pump and wiring harness. Easy install and was still loud as hell. Mounted mine behind the grill of my '96 F350.

You should have enough room for a smaller setup like that behind our grill. I've also seen guys mount them in the front fender.

If you have on board air, you will have more options, but if you don't, I'd go with a setup that has a small pump just for the horns.

Had the 4 Cadi horns. I personally don’t believe they live up to the hype. They also block a ton of airflow to the rad if mounted in factory location.

Switched to red Hella horns, the sound is much less pleasant but far far more effective at getting other drivers’ attention. They also seemed to allow other drivers to localize the sound better than the Cadillac horns which just seem to be omnipresent.

OP, what’s your goal? Safety or just outright being obnoxious; no judgement either way.

Also, the train horn builds (when done right) are $$$. A lot of money for a novelty, which does less (in my opinion) to get the attention of a distracted driver and instantly distracts every other driver in a 1 mile radius - which is fine if you’re just looking for outright attention.

In the end, I believe the money would be better spent on useful mods and maintenance, and becoming a more defensive driver so you won’t need to rely on your horn as often.

The only reasons I can think of to make a road vehicle sound like a train is either for shock value, or to compensate for feelings of inadequacy. There may be other, legitimate reasons. I'm just not aware of them at the moment.

In the opinion of me and others, waste of money.

Train horns... anybody run them? Hahaha same
I had a train horn on my old gti but it was on airride so i already had a lot of the setup. I used it to scare friends, thats about it, used it less than a handful of times toward other drivers.

It leaked air like crazy so i disconnected it and am just now realizing that its probably still under the bumper of that car.

Like stated above, its a novelty that loses entertainment factor pretty quickly.

Thanks Guys...
I have a buddy who has them installed in his Tahoe... I guess maybe there is a lot more room in there compared to a 3G engine bay.
Thanks for the all of the replies.... seems like a lot of money for occasional use. I heard some more today too... I've see that the Jeep people love them too. but mostly on gigantic Fords and Chevys.
Thanks again.

I got some cheap harbor freight horns that were near as loud as Hella...or so they said....they are louder than stock and sound better....cost like 15 for the pair in a kit with relay and wiring

did not use the relay, my son told me they would be louder if I used the relay and wired to my battery, would still be triggered by the stock horn circuit.... don't really know if true

The air horns or these? 2 Piece 12 Volt Electric Horn Set
I have a pair of those chrome ones, they're at least 8 years old now and still working great, the included relay sucks though.
