Can you post some pics of the packaging once you have some units in stock?

It could be the best-engineered radiator on the market, but if it looks like it can easily get damaged in shipping then Iíll just get an OEM one from the dealership (so I can look it over first).

Also, on top of that every trophy truck or any performance vehicle I know of that uses and automatic transmission does not have a radiator trans cooler combo so ill take the "risk" I guess
i installed a B&M kit on my 3rd gen on 1/21 and i havent noticed any sort of difference thus far. my truck still heats up like normal (just watching the water temp gauge). in order to truly see the benefits of an external cooler on your trans you should have a trans temp gauge installed before you install the external cooler so you get a baseline for what driving is like in the stock setup (under various conditions). install the cooler and note the differences in temperature.

it snows where i live, but there hasnt been a whole lot of rain/snow where im at this year. We are still hitting freezing temps, but ive really been after some snow to see how it performs in that particular environment. i can say the external cooler is hot to the touch when im out driving in 30-34 degree-ish weather and everything is warmed up; so its doing its job. no odd shifting. where i go play in the snow, there is a lot of starting and stopping, so i have zero reason to believe the trans wont hit operating temps in the snow (unless you put a giant cooler on it, live where its insanely cold, etc.).

its not really fair to compare external coolers from our rigs to trophy trucks. im sure the coolers used on trophy trucks are much thicker or larger (and cooling a much hotter trans that is undoubtedly getting beat on harder than ours). they're also external so the team can place it in a location in which they can get to it much faster so they can wrench on it if need be in a very quickly timely manner. the main reason the majority of 3rd gen owners do the cooler is to avoid a potential trans failure (pink milkshake), the added cooling is just a plus (of course, some are exempt from this general blanket, like heavy towers).

I am looking to update my radiator soon and this is one of the top contenders. At first, I was like, screw it, I'll just get another Denso. I ordered one from Camelback. It arrived broken. The overflow nipple was sheered off. The replacement Denso had one of the trans fluid metal send lines sheered off. I run a B&M external trans cooler, but considering this thing got banged around as much as it did, at least enough to sheer that metal connector off, I didn't want to take a chance.

Is anyone running one of these with Savage skid plates? I don't want to order it if it will not clear my skids. Others have mentioned that there could be some clearance issues. The general quality of the KOYORAD is tempting to me. It looks like the mounting overall is better quality from what I have heard vs. the Champion.

The Champion is my other option that I am looking at. It would be nice if it was no muss no fuss plug and play, but I have heard feedback to the contrary.

This will be my next radiator along with an external trans cooler that has a fan. Regarding the skid plate... I canít imagine this needing more clearance than the Champion which does clear the savage skid plate. In the event that it doesnít, just use some spacers.

I have a brand new champion radiator in my garage. If anyone is interested, will sell for cheap.

I haven’t heard of any failures from the 4runner guys which is reassuring. The Tacoma guys say the champion radiator, (albeit a different model of radiator entirely due to hood latch), is a coin toss. I’m just not going to take the risk.

I wish I was in WA, but I'm down here in CA. Shipping radiators is a bit of a crap shoot.

your statement is confusing. are you saying you dont want to take the chance due to interfering hood latches?

you state its on a tacoma, not a t4r, and something about a different model of rad...? you have this forum at your disposal with a champion thread with many users who can attest to the actual model fitting on an actual t4r

its no different than shipping anything else? like anything else, the shipper just has to ensure its packaged nicely with enough padding.

Sure, and I would trust one shipped from a toyota-4runner.org user, actually, but if you read some of the radiator threads on here even the ones shipped from MFGs arrive damaged by shippers with undue frequency.

Agreed. It really just is a crap shoot. I have had three Denso radiators shipped over the past four or so years. Amazon shipped one with very little in the way of packaging and it was fine. Camelback Toyota sends me one and it looked someone used the package to fight a bear. Holes, tears, accordion sections, just a complete cock up. The inside didn't actually look too bad. I didn't spot anything right off. There was short little strip of like 10 of those air bladder thingies floating around in the box loitering and doing nothing at all. To my surprise, it looked okay until it was about to be dropped in. The overflow nipple was sheered off... They did send out a replacement. This one looked better except for one puncture hole at the bottom outlet. I opened it up and was impressed that there was good closed cell foam bracing on 4 sides of this box with cardboard bracing at the filler neck. I took it out and checked the overflow nipple. Good, it was there. Then I came down to the outlet. It looked good. Fins weren't all jacked up. Oh! There it is... One of the metal 90 degree trans lines was completely sheered off! CRAP! I run an external cooler, but I didn't want to deal with the unknown force that was enough to sheer the metal away. To be fair, besides putting a lot of packaging in the radiator box, then putting that box into another packed box, I don't really see what else you can do to protect it from the shipper, (FedEx in this case).

To their credit, Camelback was good about it. They did say that they couldn't ship another radiator. I thanked them and didn't want to roll the dice again. So, going forward, I will either buy local, buy from Amazon, or get a nice Koyorad as a replacement.

Lol you should have seen how many radiators and windshields would show up completed broken from shipping when I was a Toyota Parts Manager. I bet we sent 75% of our windshields back due to shipping damage.

I just bought an "OEM" Denso at the dealer so I could look it over thoroughly before paying. Wasn't that much more and it didn't have a scratch on it.

No. I donít want to take the chance due to the number of failures the Tacoma guys had with Champion radiators. They went with a different model due to their hood latch not working with the model made for the 4runner and it is literally a coin toss as to whether they leak. See the following link.

Champion Radiator Aluminum 3 core swap | Tacoma World

As I stated, it appears the 4runner guys have not had the same issues so that is reassuring. If someone is ok with that risk I would let this thing go for $100 picked up.
