Time for a transmission oil chance - question about brands of ATF

We have a '99 that just turned over 200K, and due for its 60K transmission oil change. I think the last time I did it I used Valvoline, but ended up with a few unused quarts of O'Reilly ATF from another vehicle. Is O'Reilly ATF a decent choice? It's the right type, and hate to dump unused ATF.

As long as it's Dexron III it will be fine.

Whatever transmission fluid you decide to use make sure it is Dexron III compatible. If it is backwards compatible to Dexron III then you can use it. I used Dexron VI in my auto 4Runner for the 3 years I owned it without any problems. I'm sure other people will recommend some other options that they have experience with.

I know Toyota does not make its own transmission fluid, but that's all I've used over the years.
Complete fluid exchange every 100k miles, and a filter change around 400,000 miles simply because I was curious (the original looked fine). The truck now has 518,000 miles and shifts the same way it did when I bought it new.

I have been using Oreilly brand for my gear oil and ATF for a long time. I wouldn't worry about it. It meets the specs. Don't overthink it.

I think the valvoline ATF full synthetic is compatible with lots of ATF fluids. This is what the trans shop added into my 2000 LandCruiser transmission after it got its trans rebuilt.

That's what I use valvoline that meets the dexron II and III specs. We have several threads in the 3rd gen section on this topic already. That's been discussed in great detail. Along with the tech bulletins from Toyota stating not to use T4 as isn't not a replacement for this particular transmission.

It’s got a drain plug. Use your flavor and do it often.

I do it every 30k miles. It’s always been 4qt removed so I don’t even bother checking the pain in the arse dipstick.

I’ve been using supertech from Walmart for years.

Joe,
It has plenty of battle scars. But all original paint.

Yes, the drain plug is very handy, unlike my old Dodge pickup where you have to drop the pan.
