Shift Control Switch please help!

I’ve reached the end of my sanity...

So it’s been 4 days of trying to get this 4Runner going.. I know what the issue is but can’t get it to work correctly.

I had bad shifter bushings which caused significant wear on the Shift Control Lock

I’ve repaired the shift control lock but when assembling it binds up and won’t move. From what I can tell I have everything together correctly but the button you push down to shift into N, R, D, 2 and L is stuck!

I took everything apart and replaced bushings and reassembled with success but when trying to put the Shift control lock back in the button to shift won’t go down far enough to remove from park

I don’t know what’s wrong and I’m losing my mind

Shift Control Switch please help!

I'm guessing a couple things: your interlock solenoid is either stuck or you don't have it plugged in. It needs power to activate to release the lock.

You also need key on and press the brake pedal to shift. That's what sends the command to activate solenoid to release.

To confirm its not a mechanical bind: remove small cover in console for shift lock override and insert a small screwdriver. You should be able to manual move the lock's linkage to shift gears.

Good luck.

Edit: are you trying to move it on a table out of the vehicle? Yeah that won't work... Needs to be installed and hooked up to power to activate.

Oh dang man. I was thinking that was too simple to be the cure... But I'll take it!

What's the saying? "Can't see the forest through the trees" something like that. We've all been there.

Post up if it works. You don't have to hard mount it back in to test. You should be able to just plug in the wires, turn the key to "on" and push the brake pedal. You should be able to see or hear the plunger actually click and then the button will travel properly.

Good luck

I can confirm that I had an 'oh shit' moment a few years ago because I forgot to plug mine in before I tested it. Indeed, nothing happened.
It's an anti-theft/safety feature.

Awesome! Take the easy ones when you can. Glad it worked out. I'd bet that's an oversight you'll only make once in your life.
