new awning + deer damage

ive recently installed a new ARB 2000X2500 awning with the LED light setup. i welded some mounts onto my roof rack that ive been working on and will be gusseted soon. its pretty rad and i got it for $180.

here is the ARB setup!

on the way to a camp trip i did this weekend, i watched a deer go full sprint from quite a few yards from the side of the road, directly to my 4runner. i ended up hitting it near dead on and it unfortunately did some damage to my fender. given the situation im okay with everything, these things happen in rural areas.. im not quite sure with what im going to do yet, but i have multiple options to fix it. well see what i end up doing.

Damn that deer hit you hard! Lucky there wasn't too much damage besides the fender.

it broke a headlight mount but overall not bad! im going to be addressing a lot of things this winter, its been really getting beat and everything is starting to show. the 4runners been out of commision for a couple weekends now with some broken parts. its been 100 degrees for the past month and a half so i havent had too much motivation to fix anything right now. ive been working on that little tacoma i got a couple months ago. its almost done so i can be back on track with the 4runner

What do you think of the KYB LC shocks? My bilstiens are clapped and those seem like a good cheap(er) option before going to Radflo/King style rebuildable shocks.

i dont have a radical amount of time on them like the tokicos, but so far its a very quality and cheaper option as of right now im pretty happy with them for being i think like $30 each for them if that?? im trying to stay with a cheaper shock because id really like to get onto a 14" coilover setup for better adjustability. id say get em. i got them off of rock auto for a 1991 fj80

What links/axle do you plan on pairing with those coilovers out of curiosity? 4wheelundergrounds rear coilover bracket kit looks pretty sweet if you haven’t seen it already.

my good friend has 4WU kit, i plan on making my own links, my own mounts, and measure the exact link mounting location as my friend so its the same geometry. it probably wont be this winter like i wanted. i really want to get this 1uz swap done first. between balancing skiing costs, long distance camping trips, and having two vehicles that i like to put money into it probably wont happen as soon as id like it to. the 4runner is very capable as is so im willing to wait for awhile

Nice. You think the tokicos are better? Seems like I've seen alot fail on here. On another note, I'm moving to SLC for college soon, looks like I'll need some sort of undercoat? I'm from AZ so rust scares me lmao

ive broken 3 tokicos just from how hard i drive this thing, but they are cheap so i kept using them. i wanted to explore different ride feel as the tokicos were really stiff and probably better suited for a rear rear setup..

for undercoat i personally used "fuid film" and WD40.i used fluid film asa base coat and wd40 on top so its washable and isnt constantly oily. just know itll instantly turn dusty when you go out to moab or little sahara for example. i washed my 4runner twice a week at my shop the whole winter so that helped as well. i need to figure out a gameplan with my tacoma for how low it is now

bones

small updates

since the last post about hitting the deer, the next drive my alternator self detonated, breaking the timing cover, fan clutch, radiator, electrical, & 2 belts... the truck ended up sitting nearly the entire summer up until about mid september where i gained motivation again to work on it again. new CS144 alternator and said parts, everything's working as should.. until the water pump started leaking.... thus came a new timing belt and waterpump/ thermostat. used OEM pump/stat and a gates belt.

PXL_20211016_233658364

next up was i was tired of all my tools and camp utensils flying everywhere inside my drawers so i glued yoga matting that we use on pieces of our vans so it would help. tools are fine id like to make dividers for the camping utensils still. it works for now

PXL_20211001_003549551

lastly i decided i wanted to start bolting my sleeping platform extensions down. ive been having slight trouble with them getting out of the pins when doing heavier wheeling. i drilled a hole with supplied drill bit and installed this helicoil inside of the wood so i can easily bolt and unbolt the platforms. absolutely no issues yet and secured with a button-head t30 bit so i can still sleep with comfort

moab rock therapy 2022

i decided it was time to bring the 4runner out for some testing before rock therapy so i took my co worker down to moab for the weekend and hit a few trails. found a few parts that needed attention and fixed as soon as i got back to the shop. man front lockers are rad!

DSC09289
DSC09257

this is my second year of moab rock therapy, and let me tell you. the 4runner is a whole different beast since last time. absolutely love catching up with alex and chase!! i didnt see them too much since the 4runner was broken pretty much the entire summer. most of these pictures are from alex! he took quite a lot of awesome shots over the weeekend

9A0A3411
9A0A3779
9A0A3817

we ended up doing moab rim, steel bender, & cliffhanger. lucy did all without any assist and going up/down all the optional hard lines. i was beyond stoked of how the 4runner was doing.. after constant luck of breaking over 7 CV axles since 35, i didnt break a single thing! alex broke a cv and we put one of my spares in and kept on trucking.

9A0A4052

me helping during the CV swap

9A0A4339
9A0A4344

chase, alex and I swapped the CV and wheels on the ground in less than 10 minutes.

the list...

havent even looked at the 4runner since rock therapy.. i did take it out this last weekend after sitting on the trickle charger in the garage since moab to 5 mile pass, nothing too crazy. yet here are some picture

anyways here is the maintenance list i would like to get done on the 4runner. this is discluding the mods i would like to do which will also be stated.

- power steering pump - done
- paint rear axle - done
- new poly steering rack bushings - done
- new LBJ's (hopefully the last of lbj issues... :wink)
- fix f/r fender and fit corner lights back in - done
- fix headlights (theyre thrashed from hitting deer, big slams from rok krawling)
- coilover rebuild / revalve
- find out why key wont work in driver side handle - done; good as going to get. needs new lock cylinder
- trailer wiring
- rear upper link bushings
- obtain cruise control again - done
stuff im aware of and doing absolutely nothing about
- front and rear diffs leaking

stuff i want to do eventually, whats been on my mind

- finish the 9 inch
- rear 3 link w/ 14" coils
- LT with tundra LBJ mounts (tundra spindles/ tie rods)
- toyota truck bed trailer setup (eventually move camping to inside the trailer vs inside the 4runner
- rear swingout with various mounts on the rear bumper (no spare tire)
- warfab front bumper
-turbo/5vz rebuild. i am now putting the 1uz in the tacoma paired with a cd009 trans
