ive been steady cruising through the to-do list i made a couple weeks ago, ill post more when i have a few more items done but i have HAD it not having cruise control anymore. when i built my ARB compressor bracket utilizing the CC bracket, its been ditched for over a year now and has been agonizing on road trips. i finally put my foot down and began the process of mounting the CC elsewhere.
this will basically be a step to step proccess on how to relocate your cruise control if you had to ditch your cruise control from a turbo setup, compressor, etc.
I needed to mount the CC in a spot where stuff is still easy to service, and ease of bolting on and off whether it be from a custom nut insert setup, or oem location. first thing first was i knew i didnt have enough length on the connector to move it anywhere. I went to the junkyard, and found a 2000 4runner with the body harness still. i unplugged the harness, and cut a big section out thinking i can just cut and splice for an easy extention, that way ill have the OEM wires vs some solid wired that would be hard to diagnose from looking at a FSM. the connectors were different styles but included same color wires in the pack. i assume connector differences are 96-97 & 98-02?
- cut even length around 2-3 inches back of the OEM CC male connector from your 4runner
- splice in extention section you had snagged from junkyard vehicle
-put looming on new "extention harness" to A. appear more proffesional B. more weather resistant. make sure you insert two pieces of heat shrink before you connect wires to properly seal the looming
-leave ends of extention harness out to connect to body harness of your 4runner
-solder/crimp wires from extention to the body harness
alright, now that we've spliced in the harness extension, your connector setup should look like the last photo above. my 4runner is a '96 using the 4 pin setup, yours may be the bigger connector style but perform same process.
next up is creating the bracket.
-we will be taking off the 10mm bolt on the passenger firewall area that is next to the body/engine harness pass thru.
-your engine harness will be connected to a bracket via a tab. remove the bracket and carefully disconnect the harness mount from the tab.
-you will trace the size of the cruise control box, followed by a 1.5" wide X 3" piece on the corner. this is what it will look like for a visual reference. i used .125 (1/8") flatstock steel for this bracket
mark where CC module holes need to be, followed by marking a 1/4" hole in the middle of the 1.5" tab, and 1" upwards. bend similar angles to this picture.
lastely, cut an inch off the OEM bracket we unbolted and weld the tab on the front right side looking at the face of the connector. this is to hard-mount the engine harness again. it will look like this.
- mount and fasten bracket with the10mm bolt and set at approx 20 degree angle to clear the hood
-install CC cable onto throttle body actuator
-install engine harness connector on cut OEM tab we welded to secure
and youre back to having cruise control
please let me know if any steps need to be more detailed. it sure it nice to have CC again!
