Anyway, it got me thinking. Maybe a 4th gen but every one I see has more miles than mine and costs a crap load more. 5th gen? Again, same problem.

Mine is worth maybe 7k here in NM (?) so if I sold it and added 5 grand, what would you buy? And I’d prefer not to “just mod it”. I love off roading but I’m not a big fan of lift kits and things that just cause more problems down the road. Toyota engineers did it right and I’d like to keep it that way. Just my opinion, so please don’t flame me.

Ideas?
If you love the truck then keep it and invest the 5k into it or into something else. If you need a truck but will miss the 3rd gen then buy a Tacoma.

I would only get about 4 to 5 grand for mine if I sold it today so 9k-10k would be my budget and I would go out and buy a truck or jeep. It is just another suv to me and not sentimental or anything. Its a cool truck but its been a headache to me so I am not a huge fan.

I like that most of the responses to this thread are from people who actually have the option to drive something else and still choose their 3rd Gen 4Runner.

I fall into this category as well, and my wife and I have this discussion occasionally; she wants me to get into something "newer and more reliable," and I'm perfectly happy with my 20+ year old Toyota. In fact we have been thru 3 vehicles for her over the same time that we have owned Red. We have had our share of serious problems, even with the "newer more reliable," and might I add, substantially more expensive vehicles. The thing is that I have done tons of work on this truck, I know what it is and what it needs, and I'm happy driving it. I have my frustrations for sure, Red is not perfect, but they are fairly minor and far less expensive than fixing problems with newer vehicles.

And just to top it off, I recently bought another 3rd Gen as a side project.

So kept my 1st gen 03 Tacoma, and enjoyed having a 4Runner sibling. Wife enjoys driving the higher vision on the lifted Taco.

I will drive mine until it either breaks beyond repair or the rust kills it, I even have a much newer and lower mileage Lexus that I am getting rid of because I don’t drive it anymore

I do eventually plan to buy a new tundra, but I would still keep my 4Runner and probably drive it more, if I ever replace it I will either get another 3rd gen or an even older 4Runner

Replace it as in get rid of it? Hell no. Add to it a LX470? GX470? GX460? sure.

I'd hang on to it. I have people completely baffled as to why I drive a 22 year old, 319k mile Toyota. I just like it too much to send it down the road. I will most likely drive it until it does a total Bluesmobile on me.

I say keep your 4runner that is already paid for. I currently have a paid for 4th gen and from time to time toy with the idea of selling it and getting something new, but DAMN new truck prices.

I paid $22k for my 4runner 8 years ago with only 32k miles on it. Now 4runner's (trd pro) are hitting almost $50k. Thats just crazy to me.

If you have maintained your vehicle well, keep it (especially if you have no major issues with it). As some have said, save your money (contingency for any big repairs that come up). Maybe spend a little some good TLC on your current 3rd gen. Perhaps new seats, change the stereo, etc.

I was in the market for an SUV. Honestly...I could have bought virtually any current make/model. New.

I jumped at the chance to own a supreme condition 02 Sport.

Wouldn't trade for anything else currently out there.

It just suits me in an unexplainable way.

My job is changing as well, work want's to pay me more money. I am going to sit on my T4R and pass it down to my daughter when she can start driving, she is going to be 12 next month. Going to use the extra to pay off others stuff and enjoy maintaining my T4R for a few more years. I do plan on buying a used full size pick up to haul my tent trailer, as the T4R does ok with it, but i do plan on upgrading. I do like the looks of the GX470. Do what makes you happy.

I like my 3rd gen 4runner, it's one of the few vehicles that I've owned that actually makes me smile while I'm driving it. Mine was never meant to be a DD although it has filled that role since last July. I just recently got an '05 Outback wagon to use as a DD/ parts hauler. I couldhave gone into debt and got a new/ 2-3 year old Accord but honestly I don't NEED a brand new car, so why piss away money? I'd like to keep my runner for a while, maybe another 5 years. After that, maybe I'll look at a used Tacoma for a single vehicle to fill all of the needs.

Buy a daily driver to compliment it. I bought my 4Runner in 2001 with ~65k miles on odo. Now I'm at 260k but I've got a DD. My truck is for camping, wheeling and rolling around town in after a car wash.

You can buy a DD pretty cheap and your truck will last decade longer because of it.

Staying. Have had multiple opportunities to upgrade to a GX and 4th gen V8, but just can't bring myself to sell it.

In a few years or so, I'll add a 1st gen Tundra, at which point the 'Runner will be relegated to ice cream duty runs.

I'd say keep it. The 3rd Gen is a unique vehicle in that it might be older but it's a great vehicle that IMO has a certain amount of respect. It's not the best but it's better than some of the newest. My first brand new vehicle was a 14 FJ Cruiser that I loved and craved for a while but the novelty wore off and the debt got old. Not worth it. I'm just as happy with my 00 Ltd.

I say keep it and save the money. Or enjoy other hobbies, or enjoy less stress with less debt.

If it were me and money really want an issue I'd be adding an old Landcruiser or another motorcycle to the stable 😉
