Do you mean how do you identify which gear you have, or what gear you want to upgrade too?
And you realize you need front and rear gears to be the same right?

Call the dealer with VIN, get the axle code and decode it, or mark the driveshaft and count how many times it rotates to one revolution of of the tire rolling or driving the vehicle in a straight line.

If it's a 97 limited without an Elocker, most likely, it's 4.10 but you need to do the spin test to be absolutely sure. Even the "codes" are unreliable.

Check your vin sticker, get gear code, and thats the ratio. Heres mine an "03" code shows as 4.10 gears. You can double check with a spin test, and also count the gear teeth. Heres a gear chart I grabbed off the net a while back, not sure where I found it.

Spin test never lie's.
Have heard of the sticker codes being unreliable for couple decades. In the couple decades have messed with dozen or so Runners knowing they were as left the factory, stickers were correct. Have always wondered what situation got the "unreliable" statement going. With the carnage mismatched gears can cause def worth knowing.

Yeah that's what I've read on here for a few years now is to never trust the sticker. The spin test never lies but the instances where the sticker didn't match the actual gears could have been due them being re-geared at some point? Hard to know for sure.
When I swapped the 3rd member from my 99 parts truck into my 97 (previous owner had a trutrac LSD installed in the 99 that I wanted), I didn't want to trust the stickers so I just did the spin test. 10 minutes of my time and I knew both were 4.10 so I was GTG.

Mine does ya freak! 3RZ - 5 Speed. I even swapped them out of my old axle housing into my 2000 e-locker housing. All of my teeth were in perfect condition.

I think that's why everyone says 5-speed, 4cyl, 4WD with E-locker is a unicorn...

Good luck finding one, found a 4.56 front pretty quick, never did find 4.56 locker rear in 8 yr., was on used parts want list kept
search/want current up to date. 5-speed, 4cyl, 4WD with E-locker is a unicorn... Has to be the least available version in US seems like..
I finally put the front to use after adding Harrop locker, finding a 2k E-locker axle swapped to 4.56 in the 01 that replaced 96Red. Break in miles finished last month, for how I use it 4.56's with dual lockers is sweet.

What size tires? I'm on 285s and am debating 4.56s or 4.88.
