i don't think an ECU from a wrecked 4R is a problem. typically given their location they are fairly well-protected from front and rear impact. that's where i got mine, for my 3slo conversion in my pickup, and that ECU still works great after six years (can't say as much for the engine, which self-destructed last fall). so long as the body matches your 4R's body and probably the transmission is a match, too, i don't see an issue. definitely see if anyone else has concerns.

Ok. I am going to spend a while at the yard today tearing apart this 2000 for all the electronics I can find.

Was greeted with this joyful occurrence only a few miles into driving yesterday.

Thanks for all the advice this far guys. I don't want to throw the towel in yet.

Just got back with the loot: main ECU, ABS ECU, and this little ABS thingy

Which should I install first? Any bets?

(open Jeopardy game show mode)

Alex...
What is ABS/ECU? For the win.

(close Jeopardy game show mode)

And/or that ABS thingy would be second guess.

Hoping...

fwiw i'd definitely swap in the ECU first. that kind of mindless behavior by your instrument panel, behavior that defies ten kinds of troubleshooting, starts to make me think the ECU's got some damage. make sure that you do that with the battery disconnected, and i'd also be (probably needlessly) thorough and pull and re-insert the ECU relay.

Oof, I just put in both ABS parts thinking they are less invasive? Idk lol.

I'll put in the main ECU if these don't work.

cool. let's see how it goes. i don't see what ABS would have to do with it, but perhaps there's an issue with improper voltage or such. bizarre readouts on LCDs, and what was it, your speedo was wonky too in that photo? ... something in the signal-processing seems like a culprit to me. at least it wasn't stating you were going 30 mph but in park ;-)

I'm betting on something exotic. To much going on here.

Something either like a bad sensor or chip that creates enough background static (pick it up with a scope) to keep the speed odometer/tachometer reading a speed when stopped.

And/or a bad terminating resistor on the bus

Something which pulls power from the dome circuit.

This is quickly(if not already) moving into the wacky world of scoping the 5v/12v reference lines for background chatter.

Just bouncing ideas out there.

Cahil

Edit: P. S. Worst case temp fix would be to throw a toggle switch on the dome circuit until the problem becomes continuous and not intermittent?

ABS ECU/ other cute little module weren't the ticket.

Sigh

I have never swapped ECUs, is there anything I should know? Other than take battery terminal off?

Too bad. Make sure the part numbers match. There were different ECUs, depending on emissions package.

And if that doesn't work, you are left with the gauge cluster itself...

New ECU in, now we wait...

Just to recap on what I have tried so far

1. New gauge cluster
2. New DOME fuse
3. New ABS computer/module
4. Unplugged fuel sending unit
5. New Body ECM
6. New main ECU - still may be the fix

This is becoming so much fun!

None of the parts at the yard made a difference. New ECU has no effect at all.

Would there be any issue if I just put the pin on the plug that resets it on a toggle switch so I can reset it while the truck is still running? Or would it get angry?

So, why haven't you replaced the cluster yet? We are on page 6 of the thread, and it was the first suggestion I made in response to your first post. Mileage on the cluster can get fixed if you really care after the fact.

Nothing would get angry. Cruise control should be off, but everything else would be fine.

I have replaced the cluster twice now. Isolated that from the problem.

You might want to consider pulling the dash and checking the wiring harness at this point. Perhaps something is cut and grounding leading to all sorts of odd issues.
