AN examplw of one of tehissues: on teh 2000 $Runner the key unlocks the passenger door but not the drivers. I guess I'll start with getting a new key cut?

I guess it's worth a try. What may have happened is your ignition switch may have worn out or been fubared in a theft attempt. Then the PO went cheap and only switched the ignition switch and the driver door lock. If you then cut a new factory key, then you might get one that only opens the rear and passenger doors. If that occurs, at least you will know what happened.
