255 85 r16 q&a
255 85 R16 is an awesome size but it's somewhat boutique. There isn't a whole lot of selection in this size so I am looking for others who are interested or have run this tire size.
I believe the tire has weight savings benefits when compared to 285s it also performs better in certain scenarios. I live in FL and I've seen big lifts with pizza cutters do very well in mud for example.
What do you guys have? What is available as of 2019? What's the best tire in this size? What is popular and what's the best deal?
It would be nice to try and get tread wright to make this size maybe a group buy if there is enough interest.

I like them a lot, they are little squirmy on the road but most mud terrain tend to want to wander a bit on the road.
I have only had them on the trail 2x times now and nothing super muddy but they hook up just fine. I'm not a mud bogger these days. it just get 's into everything and wreks all the seals/bearings.
I agree as long as you have traction(not bottomed out) with a thinner tire you should get a little better push in the slop. if your in very lose sand or bottomless mud I think wider is better. just kind of depends on what kind of stuff you want to slog?

Nice! I love those steelies on your rig. I wish more companies would make this size, I am seeing most are MT tires - would be nice to have more AT selection.

I have BFG KM2 255/85/16
I love the look. They are 3ply load range E tires, so stiff and bouncier than a something like a Ko2. They will swim around on the road a little bit, keeping you from falling asleep behind the wheel! They aren't quiet either.
That said, I love these tires and will buy them again when this set wears out.
I am already used to any Noise/Harshness.
When people say they're harsh, it's not like driving a tractor-harsh. It's just a little harsher than an all-terrain. Not bad overall

I don't really need a MT tire all the time. I may try out the maxxis bighorns if I commit.

I run Maxxis Bighorns and love them. Not too loud for the aggressive tread and don't hydroplane like wide tires do. They don't weigh as much as the 285s and are load range D so they ride better also. Great tire. I highly recommend them.

I have searched around on the forums, but haven't found a solid answer. Will 255/85R16 work on a 9" wide rim? Previous owner installed the current wheels on my truck, I love them, but I want to go with a narrower tire. 9" too wide for pizza cutters?

You need to check the tire spec, they will give you a wheel width range.
I’m going to guess it would be fine section width wise but your still going have rubbing if you don’t move the lower ball joint forward or get SPC upper arms to move the tire forward. Or beat the crap out of the rear fender well.

max rim width for 255 85 16 is an 8" rim.
i have run Deck Cepek extreme country in this size and love them. NO rubbing at all (2.5in lift) no spacers needed. performance was great and it should be noted here that my 4runner is not a mall crawler. It is on trails weekly all year long!!

I love this size. Great ground clearance without all the rub problems. I’ve had DC extreme country’s on for several years now. They do really well in general-hook up great, no flats (E load range). They do get kinda loud after some mileage, and tend to follow the ruts in the road etc, but not bad for a 33” tire. I’ll probably slap another set of them on again when I kill these ones.
I did have to run a wheel spacer to keep the sidewalk out of the control arm, till I eventually got some aftermarket uca’s. The truck handles better with the spacers on so I still run them, but that’s a whole other discussion.

I wouldn't try 255s on 9" wheels. I have the maxxs 255s on 8" wheels and I think that's about the max . 255/85R16s look better on a 7 " wheel.

I've written to BFGoodrich twice now over the past couple of years begging them to make a 255/85/16 Ko2 (not KM2)
The world needs this tire
Load range E is just crazy for our lightweight rigs
If you guys get a spare 5min, DM BFG on Instagram or reach out on their website to ask for a K02 in 255/85/16. With enough demand, you never know what could happen
I had a lot of luck with DMing them on Instagram (marketing person said they were going to get this to a specific product development guy, and they've heard this request often)
They may need data to build a case

Sorry to drag up an old thread, but I felt it was better than creating another one. Is anyone run 255/85R16s on the factory rims? If so, how much lift is needed? Can I get by with 2” using the narrower tires?
