4runner and remote locks?
Hello all
I had three 4runner and a Tacoma and I have never seen anything like this.
A student of mine has a 2000 4runner Sr5 manual transmission (I had 2000 4runner Sr5 manual and 2000 limited). He has two keys for the vehicle. One for the doors and one for ignition. Is that normal?
Recently he can’t lock the vehicle on his driver side, so he has to lock from the passenger side. He said he never had a key fob (2nd owner). I told him he can buy a key fob from amazon and program to the truck, but before we order the key fob I tried the key fob program thingy and it doesn’t work on his 4runner. I thought they all had the key fob lock from the factory, are they not?
Thank you for your time

My '98 didn't come with it.

The 2 keys thing is because the ignition was changed at some point (most likely, could have been the door locks that were changed). Are the keys all metal? If so, then there's almost certainly no Factory installed alarm/keyless but there might be the RS3000 Dealer installed unit.

It'll probably be next to the steering column rather than under the seat (location changed in 1999).
Mind you that I had a devil of a time getting into programming mode and I do have keyless entry. Stupid lock actuators simply don't always work, which is a common complaint.

4runner and remote locks?
Getting a new key made off the Key Code and spray the door lock that doesn’t work with brake cleaner and lock lube should fix it. I’ve even taken the drivers door lock apart on one of my 4Runners to free up the tumblers. That one was stuck with road grime and metal shavings from the key.
First thing I did with all three 4Runners at time of purchase was get a new key made off the key code and cleaning and lubing all the locks and ignition switch.

I figured the ignition may had changed at some point. The metal key opens all the doors and rear hatch. The ignition key is the black plastic one.
Oh well, I guess he can get an aftermarket alarm if he get really tired of walking to the other side to lock the vehicle.

My 98 has a plastic key for the ignition and a metal one for the door. Does the power lock work on the driver's door? If not then the vehicle will NOT go in to program mode.

You can use the lock button on the door on your way out or double-turn the key to lock/unlock all doors on the '99+'s

My 97 has one key for the doors (all of em) and one for the ignition as well.
The orig owner did let us know the ignition was bad so they replaced that. The thought did cross my mind to replace all the cores/keys based on the VIN, but that's $$$ more than I have for it. I just deal with it.
Chip, as we call it, also has the RS3000 alarm system that was, from I understand, NOT a factory option, but was something that the dealer would have installed. I did NOT have a key fob from the OO though ☺
I gambled between the black and the grey key fob from Ebay and settled on the Black one which worked, now I can lock/unlock/arm the truck.
