That’s awesome! If you know a thing or two about copart, then you know how rare it is to get a clean title vehicle there. Reading the beginning of your build thread I felt like you were talking about my rig lol. Mine was owned by a retired marine all its life. You’ve got a beautiful 4runner!

Yup, once you know what to look for, you know what cars to avoid and which ones are deals. Glad you got a good one too!

1998 sr5 frame swap + possible maintenance/build thread

Took a little drive down south for a couple days to Cape Lookout. Such an awesome place. Views are amazing there. And camping like nowhere else. Miles and miles of just sand dunes, beach and ocean.

Honestly I don’t know much about fixing rust or welding. Which is why I decided to swap the frame. If I’d be you I’d search some threads on this site about people fixing it and ask them.

More adventures. Halfway through on of the trails I realized that one of my rear shocks came loose at the axle. Took off a bolt from the rear bumper for a temporary fix.

It’s the little things like these that make your day

And things like these that ruin a day. Gotta have both.

Do the diff breather extension boys and girls. I got lucky. Decided to check my rear diff oil out of the blue and found it to be grey. Definitely diluted with water. Only drove about 50 miles with it like that(rough estimate) so hopefully no serious damage was done1998 sr5 frame swap + possible maintenance/build thread1998 sr5 frame swap + possible maintenance/build thread

Finally got to extending the diff breather to the fuel cap. Also started killing off the sound1998 sr5 frame swap + possible maintenance/build thread. Only did the hatch area at this time. With time I want to do the whole truck including the doors.

Updating maintenance for personal records.

Changed the steering rack at 127k miles. Since the rack came with the driver side and center bushings, I left those in and used energy suspension poly bushing for the passenger “D” bushing.

If anyone is looking for an oem rack, McGeorge Toyota has the best price right now at $490. I was quoted more than $900 at my local dealer. From McGeorge it came out around $550 with shipping.

Next up is my squeaky power steering pump probably.

Cool. Thanks for the heads up. I want to do more research about used vs new and Toyota vs other brands. Leaning towards new toyota pump right now.

More maintenance updates at 127k miles.

I’ve been chasing a squeak in my front suspension for a couple months. It was driving me crazy. It was really weird. If the truck wasn’t driven for about 2 days the squeak would go away for about 50 miles. After that it would gradually get louder until it was just too embarrassing to drive with it. Initially thought it was the steering rack bushings. I needed a new rack so I changed that. Still squeaky. Thought I finally found the problem in the upper ball joints. Changed that and it stopped for about a week and then same thing. I pulled out my mechanics stethoscope and found that the squeak seems to be louder at the lower control arm bushings. So I decided to do the following maintenance:

-LCA bushings
-lower ball joints
-reboot kit on one of my ripped boots and boot slide “mod”

I’m really hoping this will be the end of the squeaks. Of course I couldn’t just do all this maintenance without a few cosmetic changes. I did a version of the satoshi grill with some amber LEDs(might add the Toyota emblem eventually). And bought some LED tail lights from Burtman.

Are you able to power off your XAV-AX1000 head unit? I just installed a XAV-AX3000 and I am annoyed that I can shut the dang thing off. My antenna won't retract until I power off the car.

Sorry, don’t get on here much. I actually got rid of my antenna because it stopped working I never listened to the radio anyways. On my head unit I can turn the screen off but I don’t think that it turns the whole thing off.
