13 MPG sound right?
Son's 2000 is averaging 13 MPG in town, that's all he drives. Its lifted, I guess with a 2-3 inch lift and BFG KO tires. But should it only be getting 13 MPH. I was hoping for a little better. What can I do to try an improved the gas mileage? Thanks.

If he is driving short distances like 4-5 miles that's fantastic! I get 11-12 MPG on those short trips in the city and my all wheel drive V8 4.7 Land Cruiser is giving 12 MPG as well!

It's 5 miles one way to his work. So I guess it's ok, I was just surprised to be honest with ya.

A clean air filter, new maf sensor and a can of seafoam may gain him a little bit. 15 to 18 is about what I get.

That's pretty close to what I average around town (stop and go traffic with plenty of traffic signal controlled intersections) in my lifted 2000 SR5 4x4 with 215000 miles on the clock.

Guess I'll start there and see if I see any improvement.

I'd say that's pretty standard for a lifted rig (with added weight of stuff like bigger tires) driving short distances. These things new off the lot with great compression only got around 16 city.
Another thing you can look at are the tires he has. Added rolling resistance can be a big killer of gas mileage.

With bigger heavier tires that is decent mpg, especially LT rated tires are are often 10lb more each over stock.
I have 265/75/16 P rated tires (about 4lb each over stock) and stock ‘99 tall springs and get 14 mpg around town, 18 on the highway at 70mph if I take the roof rack off.
Tires that weigh 10lb each over stock make a difference in stop and go traffic, rotational mass the engine needs to accelerate. I think the added height from the lift makes a bigger difference on the highway, athough heavier tires contribute, once up to speed they have a little flywheel effect I think.

The 'adjusted' (read: realistic) city MPG figure from the EPA test cycle is 15mpg. That is the number retroactively applied around 2008 to all cars that used the old test cycle. With a lift and (possibly) bigger tires, 13mpg on short trips around town is totally expected.
Cold starts and city driving KILL mileage.
Highway driving can easily get above 19mpg if you keep the speed reasonable (below 70). Oh, and yeah it was rated at 18mpg highway by the same adjusted numbers...

Are you adjusting for the different miles driven due to the non stock tire size? That 13 might actually be 15 or 16 mpg.

No I'm just going by mile per tank at each fill up.

I drive 25 miles each way every day to work. 50/50 hwy/city with 265/75s and ~2" lift on my truck. I got 18.5mpg on my last tank.
I've found that if I inflate the tires to ~42psi, I get an extra MPG or two.
On the freeway, I've gotten as high as 22mpg, but usually hover right around 20. City driving slays fuel getting these underpowered rigs stoplight to stoplight.

When I pulled 6 injectors from the junkyard and got them cleaned and flow tested locally my total investment was 110 bucks and my mpg went from 13 to 17-19 highway city and 20-21 highway

i drive about 95% city and am averaging about 17 with 33s and 4.10 gears but i have a 5 speed. I also refreshed my injectors when i rebuilt the motor so i have to imagine thats about my best case scenario without changing gears.
