FYI; here's the thread about programming the MX. I contacted UG to cancel my original order so I can get the MX.

Ultragauge 1.3 MX Question - Trans Temp??

I was just about to suggest that, good move! The MX makes way more sense for the '99+, an extra $10 for trans temps is well worth it!

Great! I ordered the right one then for my 01. Well; the 1.3 but it should do.

When my engine got trashed due to overheating from a blown off radiator hose; I had no warning other than the temp gauge most of us only look at once in a while unless maybe pulling a long hill or something. At least this way I'll have some kind of warning which brings me to another question about the UG.

Are the over temp warnings only a visual red flashing set of numbers on the UG or is there some kind of sound or both.

One reason I really like the idea of this new mount putting it right in my usual line of sight is that I will see it if it is a red flashing set of numbers only. If it makes a warning sound then that's icing on the cake. Either way I will get enough warning to pull over and shut the rig down before blowing another engine and spending over $4k.

UG does have alarms. When a preset alarm goes off, it makes a loud beeping noise. In addition, the screen starts flashing showing you what parameter has been exceeded. I've initially had my coolant alarm set to 215F, which was low enough to set off after a short stop at a rest area. Also the preset RPM alarm of ~4500 went off when I was passing someone. In both cases there was no mistaking the alarms or the source. So it's 99% foolproof.

1999+

So the UG MX 1.4 programmed for Tacoma will work in a '99 4Runner? Is that what I'm reading here?

It will work on 96 and newer 4Runner. Transmission temps will display on 99 and newer.

Thanks for that clarification. I think they even say on their website somewhere that the newer the car (starting with ODBII in 96) the more sensors it can read.

Seems like good cheap insurance to me.

Just received the scangauge mount today. Perfect fit and finish. Will post pics up in a few after work. Puts it perfectly in view and clears up my cluster.

Also just a FYI, if you destroy the screw removing it, they are the same screws as the rest of the grab handles. So grab a few extra if you go to the junk yard.

In addition to the cheap insurance, my favorite part of these gauges is the "gallons remaining". Once you calibrate the gauge after a fillup, it'll nail how many gallons you have left down to about 0.1 gal, a huge improvement over our fuel gauges that seem to fluctuate by 1/4 tank every few minutes .

Good to hear! And yes indeed, kudos to my fab, the only place I trust - I told them that tolerances weren't critical on this job, but he said they'll maintain their standard 0.005" tolerances regardless - gotta love that old school approach!
