Ultragauge, Scangauge, and 2-1/16" Gauge Mounts

This modular gauge mounting system holds an Ultragauge or a Scangauge and up to two additional 2-1/16" gauges on the a-pillar. As you can see in the pictures, they place the gauges directly in your line of sight, without obstructing your view of the road.

The mounts use the existing screw location of the grab handle, providing a secure base without needing to drill any holes. No need for suction cups, velcro, or tape, these will stand up to daily use or heavy wheeling.

The mounts are made from 16 gauge steel, and are powder coated in flat black. All installation hardware is included, including a high strength M6x1.0 screw to replace the original low-strength A-pillar screw which often gets damaged during removal.

Here are some Ultragauge mount photos:

Here are some Scangauge photos:

And here are some photos of the add-on gauge holders:

That screw can be a bear to remove, no doubt. I bought a hammer impact driver set ahead of time, just in case:

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

But as it turned out, my trusty Makita cordless impact driver with a JIS bit loosened it up with no problems.

Still haven't finalized the design, but it'll look something like this:

This looks awesome! As far as the grab handle bolt goes, I ended up having to drill off the head of one of them to allow the handle to slide over. Then I grabbed the nub of the screw that was left with vice grips and unscrewed it. Then I used 6pt bolts as a replacement.

I wonder if an iPad mini would fit there?! How would the weight be and would there be any vibration issues?

I'm very interested. Would like to get the scangauge off mt steering column. What is the price range do you think these will be in?

Edit - I'm starting to like the UG instead of the scangauge. Wonder if I should switch over?

Join us on the darkside I've got an UltraGauge MX1.3 in my 2000. I like that it shows more data at once than a scangauge (including trans temp if available on your year) and I didn't mind the extra size.

I'm starting out with Ultragauge and Scangauge mounts first, but I do have conceptual designs for phone mounts. But I think the iPad mini would be too large, rather than too heavy.

One thing I am considering is making similar mounts for the passenger side, where there is more room and no steering wheel and instrument cluster. Perhaps that can be used for the ipad min?

The UG mount is currently priced at $29.50. The SG mount will be a $10 more because it'll require an additional piece to be made (I decided to make it two piece, rather than one piece).

Yeah, I'm not a fan of the common steering column mounting - it blocks some of the warning lights. This will be way sturdier, and it won't block any of your view.

Same here, but of course it's a personal choice. The one thing I hate about the UG is the buttons on the back. But I'm working on a design to make it "touchscreen", where you mount it with velcro against a flat plate, and push on the corners to actuate the three buttons (this is not my idea, it's all over Youtube).

One thing I want to emphasize - I am a nut for keeping my eyes on the road, not having anything block my view, and having things be sturdy.

Most of the other mounts I've seen fail in one or all of these criteria. Suction cups (ahem) suck; steering column mounts block some warning lights and require you to look down; radio-area mounts really make you take your eyes off the road. And the recent idea I saw here of mounting the SG up in an FMU console overhead is neat, but requires you to modify the SG, and does not work with UG. And for those of us with aging eyes, refocusing from the road to the overhead console is less than ideal.

My mounts are designed to be located precisely where you can always see them without taking your eyes off the road; they will not block anything unless you want to admire your a-pillar ; and they are within easy reach with your hands still on the wheel.

Have you given any thoughts for offering a mount for this location? I made my own crude metal brackets which utilize the stock ashtray mount screws, but a more refined version would be welcomed. I don't really like my interior looking like a gaugefest, so I'm not really a fan of the grab handle mount location personally. This location has worked out well so far, and keeps the cable totally hidden behind the center console stack.

I had a scangauge mounted in that location initially. It's convenient from the standpoint of mounting, but I did not like it all from the standpoint of usability (for my needs).

You have to take your eyes off the road to see the gauge down there, and you have no peripheral vision of the road when you are looking down at the ashtray. So unless you're only looking at at the gauge when you're stopped, I think it's too scary. I have a trans temperature gauge mounted in that vicinity, and I find it very hard to monitor the temperature during driving, because I hate taking my eyes off the road. So I prefer to have critical gauges in my line of sight, which my mounts are designed to do.

Besides, as Charlie pointed out, someone already makes a SG mount for the ashtray location .
