Heater valve cable (dash-side)?

Hi all,
Just finished replacing just about every hose, thermostat, rear heater hardline, and the heater control valve. Went to hook up the cable and realized the inside control lever isn't doing what it's supposed to do. It'll move the wire a little, but it's inconsistent. How do I go about pulling apart the dash to figure out how to fix this? I've searched and seen another thread where a guy's dash-side cable lost a hook and fell free of the lever, so I guess a new cable might in my future.
Thanks for any help!

Those cables are steel and super hard to bend. Never seen it breaking in my life working with toyotas since 1990. Have you checked the locking clip that holds the outer of the cable to the plastic housing?

Remove the bezel around the stereo and the stereo. Since the heater control is located right above the stereo, you will have a good view of the mechanism.

Thanks! Will try to take a look soon. The wire itself seems strong like you say. Looks like the fitting on the end that connects to the dashboard side can break and disconnect:

Hopefully it's something simple. Very possible I wiggled something loose when I was messing with all the hoses while the cable was disconnected.

Well, turns out the hook that retains it was broken off. Then the wire itself was kinked a bit. Here's how I cobbled it together until the new cable gets here. Copper doorbell wire to keep it from falling down. Actually seems pretty sturdy.

JIC anyone needs the part number for the actual heater control valve cable it is 55907-35080. I know the thread is old but it may help people in the future searching the internet for the part.
