My previous 97 4R had the same exact issue, a melted 3rd brake light bulb. I replaced it and it was fine from then on. Never did figure out the reason it ended up that way, but no continuing issues.
Same here, for whatever reason that bulb melts. What's more odd is that the 2nd Gens do that too, it must be a similar wiring setup or the fact that the light housing is small with very little air circulation. But hey, it's a $3 bulb so not a big deal.
I just replaced mine yesterday and it had the same issue... Don't know how but I've never seen it on any other vehicle before either. Cheap bulb replacement and it still works! Haha doesn't worry me too much
