wireless lock entry module location

trying to find IF/where the wireless doorlock entry module is on my new 1998 4runner SR5.

car did not come with a keyfob, called the dealership and asked if my VIN had it installed they said they wouldnt know as it was a dealer installed option.

where exactly should i search (under the steering wheel collumn im guessing) to find the FCC part number that tells me which remote to buy if it has it installed.

im interested in adding it if my car doesnt already have it, would it be as simple as buying the controller like this one and a compatible remote ?
TOYOTA OEM RS3000 SECURITY SYSTEM ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT RS 3000 ECU | eBay

maybe its easier to buy an aftermarket system like a viper or something? (def dont want any oversensitive loud alarm though!)

thanks for the help with this new purchase

under the drivers seat on 98 and earlier... And some more info:

If the pigtail is there, it would be easier to verify the rest of the install and just plug in anything missing. If it never had the dealer installed keyless, then getting a currently made/supported system would be the smartest way to go IMHO.

lol, NP. And I've been through all this just a few months ago when I got my 4runner.... I'm a research-o-holic and tend to compile lots of info.

Be glad you don't have a 99+ with immobilizer and only one 'sub' key, THAT was a PITA to get sorted.

couldnt find anything under the seat.

no visible loose wire harness either.

is the module well hidden under the carpet or suppose to be easy to find?

looks like im going to research an aftermarket system.
hopefully theres an easy and cheap way to add the ability to drop the back window as well with the aftermarket solution.

My '97 had the RS3000 (removed when a PO put in a Viper system), it was above the carpet with the pigtail and connector coming through the carpet (just a cut, not unlike what my 99 has for the power seat lead). You should know that the RS3000 didn't offer rear-window control, that wasn't available until the Factory installed systems came available in 99 (the RS3000 were dealer installed, sometimes referred to as "port" installed and much more simple).

I suspect you're in for a long, uphill, climb getting a keyless system that will operate the rear window. Probably the best way to go about it would be to scavenge all needed items from a junked 4runner, that is once you identify all the items needed. That will almost certainly be the Cheapest option too, and I'm thinking by a long, Long way based on what I've paid for the little mobile electronics stuff I've hired out (decades ago).

Maybe I'm wrong, having never actually installed a keyless/alarm system (or shopped for one), hopefully for your sake. Might want to think long and hard about if you would even use it, I know I've only done it once, just to see that it worked. Not even sure if I remember how it works (either a long hold or two short holds, I think...) It's like a sunroof to me, try it once and then leave it shut for the rest of my ownership.... simply not important (actually, sunroofs are a major bummer for me as I'm 6'4" and tall through the torso, stupid things steal headroom). Anyway, the hassle might not be worth the cost given the potential use.

looks like for 60$ i can get everything i want in the aftermarket.
if i set the alarm mode to silent i wont ever care if the alarm gets tripped by obnoxious motorcycles, just turns off the relays to the fuel pump and ignition.

anybody know a better product than this one for less money?
