Scotty Kilmer is great. Total Toyota/Lexus fan. He makes a lot of good points but sometimes you have wade through his clear bias. He's not wrong about Toyota, Lexus, Honda, Accord, Ford, and earlier Nissan's. Good products for the most part.

There used to be a time that his shtick was entertaining but at some point his videos turned into click bait fodder. Him and also that Doug Demuro guy that does car reviews. He did a 5th gen TRD Pro review and said the TRD Pro black wheels were better for offroad than standard alloys because alloys get scratched. All I could think was like ‘Hey dummy, do you know what happens to black wheels when they get scratched? They leave big ugly metal scratches that are super noticeable against the rest of the black wheel!’. He also called Nitto Terra Grapplers “mud” tires. Idiot. Stick to sports cars.

There are a couple of people who don't care for his spiel but not many with 2.65M followers.

I take what he says with a grain of salt. Some of it I agree with and some I don't because my personal experience says otherwise. These days his videos are getting repetitive. I guess he has "spewed" most of what he knows so he just keeps repackaging it for new viewers. Once in a while he'll get a new problem in with a customer's car which makes it more interesting.

I think overall he is doing a good thing for those who choose to maintain their cars themselves on a limited basis. One example is advising people to NOT go 20k miles with one oil change and filter just because it says it's okay on the oil bottle/filter. That's just crazy time. I go 3k with conventional oil and 5k with synthetic. No reason to go longer/farther IMHO. I can see the particles of metal suspended in the oil at those intervals so why push it?

The cool thing is no one is required to watch his videos.

He said not to buy the 4th gen 4Runner with a V8, only because it has a timing belt not a chain like the V6.

The UZ motors are legendary, partly because of their reliability.

He might be a toyota fan but, I cant stand him or the way he makes videos. He doesnt need to yell, he doesnt need to pop out of trunks or other areas for no reason, he doesnt need to have 30 cut scenes in a 3 minute video.

He’s ok. I just hate his arms flaying every which way. I swear he’s going to punch himself one day.

I had to LOL at that too. He's against the UZ for starter location and timing belt. Personally I think everything needs to be serviced at some point. Prefer a belt at an interval vs cracking open an oily mess when timing chain guys eventually wear at an unknown point.

Scotty isn't too bad. The one I can't stand is Doug Demuro. He's too full of himself.

Yes "Doug Demuro" knows nothing about older diesel defenders yet, he posted a video comparing the newer and old defenders. He should stay out of 4X4 world!

Scotty says older toyota's are not good for DD driving primarily about breaking apart. I myself drives a 92 corolla everyday and parts are freely available throughout the world and it has never left me stranded for past 12 years!

Scotty must have read this thread... Might have to start it from the beginning where he talks about the click bait and other things.

I agree with scotty but the 1st Gen 4runner guys and the 2nd Gen Tacoma guys will disagree. They consider all 3rd Gen guys hipsters.

Seriously? Can't imagine why. Modern purists maybe but not hipsters. I confess I don't really get hipsters so maybe I'm off base on this. Third gen's are simply affordable yet with the newer ODBII standard and tech. Plus they are in the neighborhood of being 20 years old now which for most cars these days is pretty dang old.

There are a few milestones in the automotive world. Two big ones were the switch from carb's to fuel injection with throttlebody's. The other was from ODBI to ODBII. A notable jump in technology.

IMHO the rest is just fluff and over complications. I see too much tech as just a lot more things to go wrong. Sure, they are fun and great when they work right, but as time goes on they all fail at some point. Keeping it simple means it can be fixed by a shade tree mechanic with the right info, tools, and parts.

I agree. I don't understand that either. It's like in the Harley circles white collar bike riders are called squids or wannabees. Even though 99 percent of bikers like me ride for fun not for lifestyle but the hardcore guys love to think other wise and think of them selves as true bikers. Infact almost all of these tough guys are great family guys, of course with a few exceptions.
