5vz fe CX racing turbo
I've been doing tons of research the last couple weeks on the 5vz fe engine and getting some boost in the 4runner. I know TRD makes supercharger kits but I recently came across CX racing and their turbo kit for the 5vz fe engine http://vi.raptor.ebaydesc.com/ws/eBa...=1469058929646 ...
I've seen a couple people on the forum with rear turbos and doing them for relatively cheap and I've seen a couple tacos with turbo setups. But this turbo kit interest me for the price and comes with pretty much everything I need besides tuning. From what I can tell, the turbo and manifold are about average but everything else seems reliable. I wouldn't be running a crazy amount of boost to start off with. I would just see what I would like and do my tuning mainly for street use (around 5-7 psi).
Obviously the 5vz fe isn't pushing out the most torque and hp out there and I was just looking to get more out of my 4runner.
From the reviews I've read the CX racing turbo kit is pretty decent for the price but people are just skeptical about the Chinese made manifold and turbo. I guess my real concern is anything I should be aware of in trying to do this and secondly, would it be completely necessary to upgrade the fuel system to the URD 7th fuel injector kit if I was running 5-7 psi of boost (I've been getting different answers)
I believe I have a pretty good understanding of my engine and how turbochargers work, I just know there are some more experienced guys out there that could give me some advice while going through this process.

Have any links to those people doing the cheaper turbo builds? I'd like to do a supercharge or turbo to my 4Runner but I feel like it'd be a waste of money at that point investing thousands into the engine of a vehicle thats 15 years old, maybe I'm wrong though. I've only had the car for a couple months now and its growing on me pretty quick.

I think it's just so cheap because STS has a kit for quite some more because it comes with tuning and fuel system upgrades. But I want to know if the fuel system upgrade is completely necessary when I'll be running low boost.. I know plenty of guys running stock fuel systems on TRD super chargers that have close to 7 psi of boost

I emailed them while back and think they told me $900 without turbo. I want to use this kit. Add hx35 turbo. Reweld manifold and support it. E85, larger injectors, fuel pump and ems. Just no money. Lol.

How much was the total cost (roughly) when it was all said and done? And if you don't mind me asking, what injectors, fuel pump and ems did you go with

That is my goal. Don't have any of it. No money.

These pop up on the forums from time to time. Athough cheap, I think people were saying there was problems with the welding & fitment in the past, it is not a simple as they make it seem.

Fitment issues are due to this being a 4runner. The welds are not bad if you support the turbo weight. Rewelding the manifolds is recommended for longevity.

CX ("China Express") Racing turbo kits are always cheap because they're knockoffs of other parts, and have next to zero quality control. Some are fine, some are sketchy and don't fit.
Coming from the road racing aftermarket, never underestimate how expensive R&D costs can be to a small motorsports company. That's why you see new US-made kits costing 3 times as much as the eBay knockoffs. Gotta pay an engineer or two to figure it out first, but then the knockoffs come.

Yeap this is very true. I've noticed the quality go up over the years. I remember rubbing obx and cx racing crap 15 years ago. I still have a FMIC kit for a dsm that's 12 years old. Paid $200 and it's still solid and working.
The key is replacing the parts and our modifying them to work and last long time. My current dsm build will be near 900whp and lots of ebay stuff on it.

Plan on 200 usable miles per tank with that setup. I dig E85 for boosted applications, but you'd use a lot of it to make power.

Yes very true!! I averaged 185 miles per tank on my daily driver when I ran it.

Just opening this thread for the first time. I’m finishing up my second go around at adding power to my taco. I have the cx racing kit in mine and at this point, pretty much the only thing I have left that is from that kit is the manifolds, down pipe, and turbo. After I finish tuning my piggyback ECU I’ll be at 12psi boost. Running AEM 340Lph fuel pump, 650cc injectors, and a bunch of other stuff. If there’s any life left in this thread let me know and I’d love to answer any questions

I think you will have constant issues with that Turbo kit. And yeah its well over $1,000 more. but it will bolt on and just work. It I can get my runner running right I am hopping to get one next supper.

Edit: This is the TRD super charger. Its just not branded with TRD.
