I will have to admit that in the "olden days" I was not a fan of the constant pressure clamps and would always switch them out for screw clamps. Guess its cause that is what I was used to using.
many many years ago on a 4runner I replaced my radiator and replaced all clamps with screw clamps. one night in the middle of bum frick no place the screw clamp on the bottom hose came undone and the rig blew the hose off. leaving me stranded as I was not hauling any water with me.
Now many years later...i use the pressure clamps where I can and replace old if needed with them. But there are places and times where the screw clamps is all you can get or do work the best. ( example for my magnifine tranny filter, it has screw clamps) In my tool box in the rig, I do keep screw clamps cause they can fit so many sizes of hose for roadside repairs etc.

If you have the opportunity to measure and order clamps, I've found Belmetric a great resource to procure all sorts of hardware, including constant tension clamps. They have catered to VW enthusiasts for years (my other mechanical passion) and offer great pricing and service.

I am afraid we may be on the way to a retirement home.

Just today I tried looking up radiator and hoses/clamps for my 97, and found several sites listed the radiator as "no longer available" even though the same part number (16410-AZ011) showed as available on other sites.

On the hose clamps, I suspect the issue is that older years are getting left out of the databases.

I found that 90467-37005 ($7.21 at Olathe) is shown as replacement for 37001, 37002, 37004 and 37006, while 37003 ($8.87 at Olathe) is also a replacement for 37001. The 37005 part shows years 2000-2014 and the warning "This part does not fit your 1997 4Runner", while the 37003 part does not list any applicable years and does not show a warning. Obviously it is a data issue not a fit issue since both 37005 and 37003 'replace' 37001.

On the radiator, this might just be a supply chain problem, or a new part number may be in the works, or it could be we will be stuck with after-market soon

As long as your clamps aren't super rusty they are reusable. If they are seeping your radiator hosed need replaced. Radiator hoses only last so long anyways. If original I replace every 100k. I know mine were done by 250k

I postulate that the original (and, presumably, the OEM replacements) are designed for a specific hose diameter. If a non-conforming, smaller-diameter hose is used, even if it's a "good quality" hose, the originals may not provide enough clamping force.

Could be. I just know I had seeps after a timing belt change. I didn't replace the hoses at 270k due to a water pump leak. So when I put the new hoses in my clamps didn't leak anymore.

With aftermarket hoses, I probably use different radiator clamps personally too.
