Please help to understand the right part#

Hi fellow toyo owners. I need a help in part identification/fitment confirmation.

Looks like my TC actuator is dead and I need a replacement. I have used ToyotaPartsDirect WS to identify it and looks like I need 3641035040. But it costs about 1.5K new (which is insane for couple gears and electric motor), so I have decided to find an used one. The issue is that ebay doesn't seem to have one, but few of 3641035051.

They look identical on pictures, but I was not able to confirm if they are interchangeable or not. Could anyone help me with that? Or may be point me to some direction for more research?

Thanks.

look on Craigslist for someone parting out a 3rd gen or a member parting one out that will ship it to you.
edit; correct link for a new one 3641035040 it's $580 + shipping. https://www.amayama.com/en/part/toyota/3641035040

I don't know but hopefully @phattyduck will jump in cause he would surely know.
you can also try and call your local Toyota dealer and ask them but they might not have the answer.

It is pretty hard to confirm anything without knowing exact specs of the vehicle... Year, at the least. As you can see, there are multiple versions of the actuators.

Hi, you are totally right I mean the one I have in my garage - 1996 LTD. Not a J-shifter. Has external mounted actuator with squared plug.

It may be cheaper to get a whole transfer case with actuator. You do need to make sure you get the right one though - there are 3 versions of the electrically operated transfer case through the 3rd gen 4Runner years. You have the 'early' version that is non-multi-mode. It does look like it crosses to the Tacoma (first gen) push-button transfer case, if that helps widen your search.

I tried telling him that in the other thread he posted in, but that's not the information he wants to hear.

Actually, no. You started from: "it is impossible to replace actuator without taking apart TC". And I know for a fact that several people have done it successfully. Doesn't mean that I can do it too, but nevertheless...

And strictly speaking - yes, the question was about part numbers ;) Simple: 'I don't know the answer' would suffice ;)

Anyway, thanks for the advice. I might eventually get there (to replace TC), but I am not there yet.

Have you found an accurate photo of the *40? I can confirm that the *51 is not identical to the one in my 99 limited (M/M J shifter), it has 3 wires and so presumably 3 timing contacts instead of 4. Can't say for certain what effect it would have to try and use the wrong one but I doubt they can be interchanged without some sort of loss of function. Check how many wires are in the bundle circled here on your vehicle. This image was labelled as a *51 in the listing I took it from. I believe but I'm not 100% certain that the one in my truck is a *40 with 4 wires. Can't guarantee they are interchangable if they have the same number of wires but I think having a different number means they are not.

Hey, thanks for an answer - I do have lots of pics of the *40 one, since I am trying to rebuild it now and documenting the process ;)

And I can confirm that it has squared plug and 5 wires in it - two for motor and three for contacts. Exact the same configuration as on picture. Hence the question: what is wrong here? Do they put wrong part # in ad and it's *40 really, not *51? I am wrong with part # of my actuator? Or they are actually identical?

WS I am using for part # identification says: 'cant confirm fitment' on *51 for my vehicle. ((((
