Hi,

Having 1996 early LTD with transmission: A340F (I believe, early version). I want to replace transmission fluid with filter and ordered this one More Information for ATP B176 it seems to be proper one, right?

Also I am confused how much fluid would I need. Specification says A340F needs 10L for the dry fill and only 2?! litres for drain and refill. Also maintenance video posted here in the pinned thread says guy used 1US gallon (almost 4L). I am totally confused what is the appropriate amount for the fuild change with filter? And where are all those 8L hiding then?!

The last one: did anyone use by any chanсe one of these products?

Specification says automatic transmission needs DEXTRON III and first one meets that requirement, but price is suspiciosly low and second one has very confusing description, so I am not sure does it meet DEXTRON III req or not...

When I've drained mine it took just under 4 liters to refill.

The Motomaster Dexron III is just fine. I've used it.
Napa also has Napa Premium Dexron III for the same price sometimes less.

I wouldn't use the "multi" vehicle one.

The torque converter holds the other 6 liters.

When I exchanged mine, 3 Gallons worth, ( I exchanged the all the fluid )I used 5 gallon Autozone Dextron Merc.

How this works is the higher levels supersede the lowers level of Fluid so Dextron 5 replaces Dextron 2


When I do any more exchanges I am going to use Valvoline MAX Life ATF. As it exceeds all the requirements for the fluid.

I have seen pages of disagreements on which fluid is the best on a pile of forums and everyone is going to have their own opinion on it.

Some folks even use the Toyota T 4 fluid and i believe Castrol is the mfg of the Toyota WS Fluid.

When i do it . I pull the pan. Replace the filter. Clean the magnets and put it back together. This is only about 1 Gallon of fluid.

To exchange it, I pull the coolent lines on the radiator place in in a bucket and pump the fluid out of backet into the return line. So the engine pumps it out the my pump pumps new fluid in.

I am sure folks do it other ways. I just exchange the fluid and switch it all at once. I should have pictures of it here somewhere.

If the fluid is Dextron II or higher compatible. It will work. :-)

Btw, is there instruction on how to replace fluid in the torque converter?

Fill up trans fluid, start it up, 2 quarts out, shut-down, fill and repeat over and over..... Or take it to a shop that pumps/replaces it all out for about $79. I like the latter, I take my own fluid....

You have to exchange the fluid.. A spill and Fill only changes a gallon of fluid. Or 4 liters.

So you want to mess around. Fill a 4 liters then run it drain the 4 liters out. Do this like 4 times and you most of it exchanged.

Or you use a homemade atf fluid exchange the fluid. disconnect the atf radiator cooler and hook into the output line and send that to a bucket. Take another bucket hook a oil pump to it put your new fluid in it and hook it to your return line from the cooler. Then you can control the rate of fluid by how long you run the pump. Pump a gallon in and fire up the rig. when the old fluid goes bright red. you have exchanged the fluid through out the entire system. This can be done in 10 min or so and is the fastest way i have ever came up with for exchanging the fluid. I went through my photos and don't seem to have a photo of my ex changer hooked up. I will take photos of it tonight and put a sub thread under my builds post on what it looks like and how it works. :-)

A couple of notes:

- There are two different transmission pans and filters, depending on whether you have a 2WD or a 4WD. The 2WD pan is shallower and holds less fluid (thus the differences in reported drain/fill quantities).

- The filter/pickup in the pan is just a screen. Not much of a filter. If the trans has been neglected, it can get clogged up, but it really isn't a normally serviced part.

- I would suggest doing the simple version of fluid exchanges - just do a drain and fill with each of the next few oil changes (say, one every 5k miles or so, 3 or 4 times) and you'll have mostly nice fresh fluid in the trans.

- The trans isn't that picky about fluid. Get whatever Dexron III or better fluid you want.

This is how I do it too plus I installed a Magnafine inline filter.

Is there a reusable pan gasket available anywhere? I find those to be great on other vehicles.

You have to go aftermarket to get a reusable pan gasket. Toyota silcone those pans on by the factory so they don't make a gasket. I checked my records and I didnt document the pan gasket I used. :-(

BoomerBob Great thought on adding the magnafine inline filter. I mostly exchange fluid every 50K or so and clean the internal magnents and change the screen filter every 100K. I am seriously considering adding a magnafine inline filter the next time I do one of mine as well.

Thanks! It does help. You can add the inline filter anytime by putting it on the return line coming from your radiator or separate trans cooler like I did. No Strawberry milkshakes for me! ;)

I just change the rads every 6 to 10 years with Denso you should not have to experience milkshakes.. Liquid heat transfer is a lot more efficient then air cooled. Just thermodynamics. I never did the research as to if Denso corrected the radiator issue. I just figured for $100 bucks from Rock Auto its worth not worrying about and not need an external cooler. But this is just my thoughts on it..
