4wd decided to quit working

I'm heading up next weekend to go bow hunting. I decided to check that my 4wd is working and for the first time ever, it's not.

No 4wd light on dash and definitely no 4wd drive.

Where do I start checking?

Start with ADD and VSV (vacuum system). If you are lucky the problem is there. Lucky since it can be fixed cheaper and easily. If not, continue further. You can also check the 4wd fuse but yeah the vacume is a good start.

Any lights at all on the dash? If nothing the fuse would be my first since its not even trying.

I'm going to work on it this morning, thanks for the link to your thread. I'll check the fuse first but when I pull the lever, I do hear a click noise that comes from glove box area (relay?). It makes the same noise when I take it out of 4wd.

Hopefully, it's something simple.

4wd fuse is fine.

I have zero experience working in the 4wd system on these trucks so bare with me.

I tried switching the two hoses but it didn't change anything. But, the two hoses are not even the same size. One is larger than the other? I can't find any pictures that show exactly which hoses to swap so I could be doing it wrong.

Crawled under the truck and don't see anything obvious. At the same time, it's hard to see anything under there.

Not sure how to proceed. If someone could mark up a picture of what needs to swapped/done, that would be helpful.

OK I realized I wasn't messing with the correct tubes, I have found them now.

I first checked the manifold to make sure I had vacuum and I did. I also made sure the check valve was working (I can blow in it but you can't suck any air through it) so that appears to be fine.

The orange VSV has vacuum and the black one doesn't when I'm in 2wd.

When I put it in 4wd, neither the orange or black VSVs has vacuum.

So what's next?

I switched the two hoses around and now the 4wd light comes on??

Sounds like you need a new vacuum switching valve. Unplug them and make sure that you are getting power and ground to them when shifting in and out of 4wd just to rule out the switch on the transfer case or the wiring. A new valve is over $500 from Toyota.

Well I fixed it! After finding some write ups and how the system works, it turns out one of the VSVs was bad.

Thankfully I had a spare set on my parts truck. Everything works like it should again.

Everything was working like it should but the one VSV wasnt getting a vacuum when I put it in 4wd.

I used The Durks write up on how to diagnose the system which was spot on.

It looks like the part is about 90 bucks online 25860-75160 - Toyota Parts Deal)

Are there any differences between the two VSVs? One has a orange connector, the other is blue but they look identical.

I believe that the vsv that Mike linked is for the EVAP system. I replaced this valve three or four years ago because yours truly broke the plastic piece that attaches to vacuum while replacing wires around there that a rat had decided to munch on.

Nope, the VSV for the 4wd system is a hair under $500 at my dealer as stated earlier in this thread so be glad you had one on hand Mike.
