So I removed that bent spring thing, reinstalled my knob and now my front driveshaft is locked when my tcase is in the 4hi position! However my dash light doesnt come on.

What is this spring thing? And do I need it? When I pulled the boot, it was just sitting in there....

That spring tensions the shifter towards the '2WD/4WD' side of the shift pattern. It should be in there. The shift lever rides up and down on the flat section of spring in the middle. Look at the orientation in the pic below.

Generally, you don't want to remove the cover for the shift lever. The 'correct' way to remove the shift lever is to pull the c-clip and leave the housing in place.

Of course, since you are looking to fix whatever is messed up below, you needed to remove that cap - but getting the lever in correctly is easier once the cap is in place. Also consider getting a new shift seat for the 4WD shifter, it is probably disintegrated (it is gone in the picture above, about to get replaced).

Id assume to stop from bumping the shifter out of 4hi and into neutral accidentally? In the picture mine is pretty bent, would you suggest just leaving it out for the time being while a get a new one? I looked online for quite a while, I could not find a part number on that spring anywhere, you wouldn’t have a part number would you?

PN should be: 36349-35010, SPRING, TRANSFER SELECT RETURN

It looks to be the same for most/all of the j-shift cases (conceivably different for the forward shift case. You can probably bend it back into shape.

And yeah, it is probably mostly for safety. You can easily hit neutral when you are trying to go back to 2WD if you don't have that spring in there.
