Today I put her up on jack stands and pulled the driveshaft. What a bummer.
First thing I noticed was the shaft is 2 pipes pressed together with a rubber liner in between. Which goes right along with my first impression of the problem, which was a BENT shaft - like somebody lifted the truck with a forklift.
That rubber thingy is 19 years old. It can drink, in some states!
There's no sense, at all, in fooling with junk like that. You will not fix it and, if you do (i.e. have the shaft balanced), it will move again very soon, causing the problem to reappear.
I bought a new one:
Driveshaft fits TOYOTA 4Runner 2WD 6 Cyl. BRAND NEW 1996-2002 Auto, Drive Shaft | eBay
My advice (for what it's worth) is to do the same.
