2001 - Finally lost all power --Used throttle body?

Hi all,

2001 4Runner 243,000 miles. I posted before about how I would intermittently lose power on long trips, only for a few seconds at a time. Well I have driven another 6k and finally it has given out on me. I lost power three weeks ago getting off the freeway (after losing power on the highway 30+ times in 30 miles). I had my foot slammed to the floor, the car would not move, car honking behind me. It finally roared to life and I made it home. Was losing power going up my driveway. It is now parked in the dirt and I'm driving my other car.

My mechanic said $1,200 + for new throttle body. 2001 and 2002 you cannot replace throttle position sensor w/o replacing the whole throttle body. He thinks it's the sensor and a lot of you guys thought so as well.

Any advice on ordering a used throttle body from eBay or the like? They are selling for ~$230 or so, whereas mechanic and dealer I think is around $900 + labor. Any advice appreciated as I'd like to get that thing back up and running. Thanks!

Hmmmm.... Oddly enough when I entered in my VIN on toyota parts, it looks like I can get one for $517.... Not too bad, I wonder if the sensors are included with this? Anybody know?

@duke808 Do you have cruise control? When I look up that part number on here: Throttle Body - Toyota (22210-62220) | Toyota Parts it says it doesn't have cruise control. I have a 2000 which is a different throttle body than 2001 and newer. If it's any help you can expand your used part search to tacoma's of the same year.

Edit: When I look it up on this page: Throttle Body for 2001 Toyota 4Runner | Toyota Parts it says it's for cruise control with the same part number so I guess you're good. I'm pretty sure it comes complete with sensors since you cannot get the sensors separate.

Yeah I have cruise. I’m going to call that dealer today and double check. I’ll probably order that instead of take my chances with eBay...

Did you try to replace the throttle position sensor? that could be the issue as it is not sending proper signal to ECU. Say with OEM if you plan to buy one.

On 01 and 02 you cannot replace sensor by itself you have to change the entire throttle body

I am currently parting out a 2001 and have a used throttle body that worked before the engine developed rod knock. I can do better than $230. PM me if you are interested, can send a few photos too.

Your symptoms are consistent with throttle body failure since there's still a mechanical cable attached to the throttle that can override the little motor. The first 1/2 of the travel doesn't open the plate but if you floor it, the cable does open the plate enough to get it to accelerate like you experienced on the freeway.

I am wondering why they didn't make it removable like the 96- 00 are. I had a sensor go on a 98 2 screws I was back in business. Mine just through the check engine light on. Good to know this as I have an 01 as well. :]

Love when people see MSRP for a new part and make the case not to buy that year. This part can fail but not that often.

Unless your 01-02's ABS pump assembly goes bad. They cost more than the 4Runner can be worth new, around $2200. An engine or transmission swap would be cheaper!

Yeah, but they can still be sourced in junkyards for much cheaper too. On the bright side, 01-02 has 4-channel ABS. They don't act up like the earlier 3-channel system. Only solution to those is a full-on ABS pump replacement as well. That part isn't cheap new either. No one notices the issue because it never throws a CEL.

Thanks for the offer! I actually didn't see this until today. I ended up getting one off of eBay for $240 (with a return policy) and had my mechanic install it for $90 a couple of days ago. Been two days of freeway and city driving, and so far so good! I'm pretty sure that fixed the issue. Super happy it seems to be working again!

It is with great sadness I must report that the new (used) throttle body did NOT fix the problem. It has been cooler here the past week or so (since I have had the fix) and I haven't been using the ac. Well the heat is back and with the AC on and it being 80+ out, the loss of power is back. FML.

ANY IDEAS??? At this point the car is now undriveable again and I may just end up dumping the car. Lol
