That's what the second link I posted above addresses, although they claim it should not be an issue with EM 1.2

There is no CAN bus on the gen3 4Runner. The OBD port is directly connected to the ECU and that's it (well, and a power and ground connection). The 7.5A OBD fuse is hot all the time though...

Oh, edit before finishing: There is also a connection to the SRS (airbag) computer on the same SIL line that is used for OBD communication.
