Figured I might as well swap those out as well. I'm going aftermarket solenoids. Not going to put upwards of 900 dollars in 3 OEM solenoids on this trans when I have an extra in the garage. These solenoids ran me 100 bucks and came with a filter but I'm not using that one I'm going to stick with OEM. Well see!!
Till the weekend then..

The filter is just a metal screen. So if you have a pile of debris in it. Won't be looking good for the tranny. I am curious what the pan magnets look like too.

Does it happen at 18mph as you come to a stop? I've always noticed that with mine since I bought the vehicle at 232K miles, right now I'm at 260K and it's still there. It always happens when the OD is engaged and I'm coming to a stop, I hear a clunk. If the OD is OFF, it never happens so it's something to do with overdrive solenoid or the torque converter disengaging... Very strange.

I'm interested as well. This is the mess I dealt with originally.

I completely cleaned the magnets to make them look brand new as well so well see what's going on! Btw I race in 4lo on a sand drag strip at the silver lake sand dunes and this thing kicks ass. I rarely lose unless someone has some crazy mods. Anything stock jeep wise or truck wise I dont lose to. Trans revs out to 5500rpm through all gears no problem. Lol time and time and time and time again. Fun stuff. Parts are a dime a dozen out here I'm not worried about breaking anything. I just dont want to end up on my back in the middle of Michigan winter doing a trans swap in my garage 🤣🤣

Well I swapped the filter and all three solenoids and the check engine went off the trans noise went away and it's looking pretty clean! These transmissions are really bulletproof! Magnets were dirty again but no chunks of metal just sludge. The last filter swap did its job and so did the magnets. I'll revisit it again in the spring and if anything flush the fluid and install another filter. Rinse and repeat untill shes clean!

I would be looking for spare trans with lowish miles and never been cracked open. that is a lot of clutch material IMO.

I did not take pics of the pan but... this one 240K miles and never been cracked. fluid was a little black but still had some red in it.

https://www.toyota-4runner.org/3162709-post2.html

the pan had no where near that amount of build up on the magnets.

also? why is the paint missing on the inside of the pan? did that trans endure some crazy high heat?

I know when I cracked open my 98 with 215k on the clock my magnets didn't look that bad. I agree there is a pile of material being gathered. My Transmission was never opened before then and I bought it off the Original owner. My fluid had a tint of red left in it and the metal screen filter was clean.

The OP of this thread has a transmission in his garage so maybe he is testing limits of his current one. I really am not sure.

I was curious as to why the transmission would sound starved for fluid. To me, that sounds like a failing TC or pump going.

Maybe it will last quite a while yet and only time will tell. The way its producing material especially metal this should be interesting.

So the answer was a clogged screen that starved the transmission pump for fluid. I have never seen a good transmission with a clogged filte as they dont fill with debris unless your transmission is failing. So well see how long she stays together. Anyone want to place bets as how many miles it will be? ;)

im not a big fan of just a metal screen for a filter, ive had them out and the screen openings are kind of big in my opinion , for a filter. its why I switched to magnafine filter in line.

as far as bets on how long the p.o. trans will last, no bets from me....esp since he drag races it

Been about 15k but I've done a lot of racing on the dunes. No current issues shifting at all under any speed. Been almost 100 miles since new filter and solenoids. No issues.

Lol. I agree nothing wrong with adding another metal mag filter inline. However lots of bon-ferrous metals in the transmission as well. Most debris get super crushed to fragments and that how the fluid turns into sand blasting material.

I am just curious how long it stays together. as I don't have to work on it or fix it. I dont care if the OP does neutral drops. Drag races it or even melts it together. This is just entertainment. Someone pass me some popcorn...;)

I've already got one with 100k miles less on it than my current one! Not worried if this one goes out. Ive also got a 2011 Nissan maxima I just dont drive the thing. Has 67k miles on it. Btw I have no idea about the pan color. The pan looked that way the first time I ever dropped it so it's a previous owner thing. I assure you if this was my truck for the last ten years shed be in far better shape.
