Question Is my climate control supposed to illuminate on ‘99 SR5

Hi,

Since I bought my truck used not too long ago, my climate control/AC cluster has never lit up in the dark when I turn on the lights.

I was wondering, do I just need to change the bulbs and fix it or does it not even light up?

Yup, should lite up. Common for old bulbs to burn out. Best thing is to convert all dash lights over to LED. You can search on forum for write up and part numbers. I used Super Bright LEDs brand for mine.

Yes, I believe it is 2 #74 size bulbs for the climate controls. The 3 buttons above the climate control should also light up (rear window, ECT PWR and Defrost). Those are little mini bulbs that are harder to find...

like @dogtail , i used superbright LEDs for mine and got it illuminated again. when we got the vehicle, basically zero lights worked. the entire instrument panel was dark, dome light was out, fogs were out. there are lots of great writeups to show you how to do them all, and which bulbs to order. i ended up getting turn signal indicator lights (instrument panel) that are *too* bright, but will live with it for a while.

I find a lot of LED bulbs (the ones I've used) can tend to be too bright for the application.

I've noticed that a few of the sockets don't seem to work nearly as well as they use to though even when using the right bulb.

Well the dimmer allows you to set the dash lights to the brightness you want. Does your dimmer work? I know you have to pay special attention to seating the sockets well. I had to pull my cluster out once or twice to re-seat them right on install so they would all work. But all has been good since my install, I like the light level on mine. You could go with an amber color LED to tone it down as apposed to a bright white if you want.

I suppose if you change out every bulb that will work. I had some LEDs as my turn signals for a short while and it was blindingly bad.

Yeah I don't think hardly any people change out to LED for dash turn signals and idiot lights, not needed and too bright. Those lights don't really burn out cause they're not turned on that much. LED is good for dash and cabin lighting. For dash lighting you can totally dial it in to your preference with the dimmer.

Hi. I want to thank everyone that replied for their help. I love this forum. I have the climate control bulbs figured out. The glove box bulb is also the same #74 as the climate control.

Now I'm trying to figure out about the dash bulbs. I want to change the bulbs for my speedometer and RPMs to LED. I'm goona search but based upon my previous search I feel like the information regarding the dash and climate bulbs is very hard to come by and has a lot of dead links, compared to other things. SuperBrightLEDs has a good website though.

edit: LED Dash lights FAQs - Toyota 4Runner Forum - Largest 4Runner Forum

guess I'm all good.
