New frame and body for 2002

My 2002 4runner was totaled, It was very nice and I would like to transplant the power train to another 4runner. What years can I use. I found that 1999 to 2002 frames are interchangeable, but was wondering if I could use a 1996 to 2002? I would like to find a "new" one with a bad drivetrain and a perfect frame and body.

I just did a frame swap so I will tell you what I know.

96 body/frame has 1 fewer mount on it so probably stay away from that, unless you want to weld on matching mounts/perch for the body to frame connection.

97-98 have matching frames and body. same part numbers in fact. but these body mounts are unique to the 97-98 years.

99-02 have the same frame and mounts as far as I know. all the body mounts for 99-02 should be the same. evap canister is located in the rear on 01,02 whereas it's front mounted 99-00 so you will have to figure that out if you get an older frame and want the braking system and evap from your 02.

you need a 4wd frame, or you can move the transmission cross member.

in a perfect world I would look for a 01,02 frame/body with bad engine/trans.

you can do anything but it just depends on how much work you want to do?

Go on Copart or IAAI and find a good 4runner you like with mechanical damage and buy it, swap your engine/trans in it and call it a day.

have you ever used those sites? my understanding is they require a large fee and require a business lic. otherwise you are at the mercy of registered buyers?

so it seems like these auctions are really not open to the public, unless you want to pay all the extra fees and or put your trust in sketchy agents.
