3rd gen engine swap

I’ve came a long way with my 3rd gen 4Runner, and I’m thinking of doing an engine swap in the spring for more power. Does anyone here have any input on a V8 or diesel swap into a 3rd gen? Or even a bigger V6? I’m trying to stay mostly Toyota with this, but I’m just trying to work out a base for the project so I can start lining the pieces up. 4.7 out of a Tundra, or Sequoia? 4.0 out of a 4th gen 4Runner or Tacoma? 2.8 Cummins? What has anyone put in besides another 3.4? Or would it be more cost effective to just move into a 4th gen? I do quite a bit of off-roading as well.

2JZ.
Look up the drag racing 4Runner on 1320's Youtube channel.
It will bring a smile to your face.

There have been a couple on here that have done the 4.7 V8 swap.

Yes. No question. You'll either spend a whole lot of time or a whole lot of money, possibly both on any engine swap. Especially if you're looking to swap a 1GR or 2UZ it definitely makes more sense to upgrade to a platform that was built that way from the factory. Especially with 4th gens starting to dip way down in price over the last couple years.

I like the 3rd gen as it comes in a manual so I’d love to do a swap as well.

As a hypothetical: if money and time wasn’t part of the equation I would do the 2.8 Cummins

Doing the V8 swap is a labor of love (gotta have it) kind of thing, time and money.
Was a Thread here about doing it while back with 2UZ, good details of job.
If I ever want serious power I'd do a 3RZ built to 300 HP or so, a 500 HP 3RZ has been doing well in KOH races, just me on that though.

4th gen V8 or 100 series Cruiser for sure. That being said, don't be afraid to hammer the stock 3.4 and keep her out of OD when needed. They can take a bunch of punishment. A turbo or supercharger (both of which are extensively documented) will both be much less work than an engine swap.

That's what I was going to suggest as well. A supercharger takes about 6 hours to install and has no wiring to mess with. It's all mechanical. Plus once you've gone forced induction it's very easy to add more power on top of it. Cheaper than a V8 engine swap too.
