vibration after toytec boss lift
Just got a 3” Toytec Boss lift on my 01 limited 4wd. As soon as I jumped on the highway to head home, I noticed a pretty bad vibration starting around 55 and getting worse as I went faster (only went up to 70). Basically feels like driving over washboard at speed, or those rumble strips on the side of the highway that tell you you’re driving off the road. Not as severe as that, but same feeling. Issue is unchanged if in 2 or 4, and acceleration has no bearing on it.
Went back to the shop that installed the lift (and who had also just balanced my new duratracs- 265/75/16), drove it with them and they said it felt like a driveline issue. Talked to Front Range Drive Line here in Denver and they advised I remove the rear driveshaft and see if it goes away. Did that, and the issue remains the same, but now it gets much worse when accelerating. At 65, push the pedal down and the vibration gets way worse, let off and it goes back to the previous level.
Had Front Range replace the axle side U joint (they thought it was getting to be that time) and balance it, threw it back in and removed the front drive shaft (could not find confirmation online if 01 Limited T4R uses an ADD or not). Same issue, back to the way it was before (acceleration has no impact, vibration from 55 up).
Should also mention everything was perfect before the lift, and the vibration got somewhat better as the new springs settled (not sure there’s a direct correlation there, but it kinda seemed tied to that). You can feel this in the whole truck, but especially in the steering wheel, and it feels front end-ish to me. What do you guys think? Where do I look next, CV joints in the halfshafts? They did install the diff drop that came with the Boss kit.

Did you get an alignment? You didnt mention it in your post and that would solve the problem if it hasnt already been done. My guess is they took off your LBJ to put the lift on and the caster/camber were knocked out of place.

Bah, knew I'd forget something. Yes, alignment done right after the lift, and then re-aligned two days later because they didn't get the steering wheel straight.

Had the exact same issue on mine after my Toytec lift was installed. The 3 inches of lift was too much angle on the CV axles. Lowered the coilovers and completely fixed the issue. Also, hope you dont have stock CV axles.. Both of my boots ripped badly within a month after I installed the lift. Lower ball joints possibly? Had mine replaced with lift.

Yeah I did LBJs too. Still on stock CV axles- expecting to possibly do the CVJremans with the silicone boots- what CV axle did you end up doing? How much did you drop your coilovers? Did you replace rear springs to match?

What ride height are your toytecs at? All the way up? That would do it.

Supposed to be a 3" lift, of course I didn't measure before so I can't confirm the measurement. Not sure how much room is left on the spring (don't have the truck with me at the moment). I will say the whole thing looks higher than I expected based on other owners' photos. Makes me wish I had gone with some 285s (though I stand by the prudent decision to retain fuel economy with 265s)

You didn't install a diff drop?

Yeah a 3" lift almost needs 285's, been there. But if there arent any threads left on the coil overs, your up to high. Back them off and get that CV angle down.

I assume you balanced your tires and checked all your joints for slop...?

Front could be sitting too high.
Yes its a 3 inch lift but every truck weighs a little different which means the same setting on the coilover will give different heights on different trucks.
Measurement from the center of the hub to fender lip. Stock is 20 inches so you don't want to be over 23.

Going to jump on the 'too-high' band wagon. 3" is just too much for the stock geometry. 2.5" is pretty much the max.
One thing to remember when you are measuring height gain, is that you should compare it to the additional height over stock when the OE suspension was new. Often forgot about factor.

Mine does a little too after alignment. There seems to be just a slight amount of slop in the uca and lca bushings. I'd start tracking all those down. Bushings and u joints all tell a long story when they are put into a stress zone they aren't familiar with. I've been down this road a few times with a few trucks that I lifted.
