so now that I have everything wired up and working decently, I have a couple issues, first of all the 4x4 indicator light does not come on, 4wd works but the light on the dash does not, it worked when I had the auto harness in with the 5 speed but no longer works after my harness swap, I have one unused plug on the tcase but from what I have read that is only used with the auto.
my second issue is I have a rough idle now, either in gear with the clutch in or in neutral, doesn't make a difference, felt like it was going to die at a stop light today but has plenty of power while driving, no cel or codes in the system and I let it idle in the driveway for a while and it was still slightly rough but didn't dip way down like while I was on the road. I looked everywhere for a vacuum leak and can't find any. anyone have an idea as to why this might be happening?

Repinning an auto harness for use with a manual ECM
Sounds like you might not have everything plugged in or maybe something isn’t sitting correctly. Check engine light ?? I repinned my auto harness. Been 0 issues since.

I’m thinking that might be the case with the 4wd light so I’ll have to recheck my plugs, I only repinned the one because I used the engine harness
I have no check engine light or codes, I’m thinking I must have a vacuum leak somewhere because I removed the intake plenum, and I can’t seem to do that without introducing some hard to track down leak

The ground for the 4WD light (ADD indicator switch) goes through the engine harness, so that is likely the problem. Check for that wire, and/or make sure the ADD indicator switch is plugged in, down below the driver's side exhaust manifold.

So I fixed my vacuum leak, examined the wiring, everything looks good, I tested 4wd again and the light comes on but only in 4lo, any ideas why that might happen?

Are you using the transfer case off your auto trans or the one that came with the manual trans? The auto trans transfer case has 3 position switches, the manual transmission case has 1 switch only...
So, maybe you have your 4WD indicator plug connected to the 4LO switch?

Yep I’m using the auto tcase, I looked at the wiring diagram and I’m sure that’s the problem, I’ll mess with it later and update, thanks

I haven’t been very good at updating this thread but everything works as it should now with no warning lights on the dash
In other news I managed to find a Tacoma with manual hubs at the junk yard and got the whole assembly for $70
Here they are installed on my 4runner

I have a 97 3.4 with a manual, I didnt realize they were rare. Normally avid four wheelers prefer autos, is the gen 3 auto that much of a dog?

That's pretty cool, I wondered if that was possible on a 4 runner. Did you notice any difference driving with it unlocked. I could on my old jeep.

Aren’t the axles in this set up slightly thinner ?

I've really only driven it like half a mile since doing the conversion, some people say they notice better mpg with the manual hubs and some say it doesn't change

the 3rd gen auto is perfectly fine, I just really like driving a manual and I've heard something like 3% of 3rd gens came with the manual so I decided to do the swap instead of hunting down a vehicle with one already in it, learned a lot in the process as well which is an added bonus

The thickness of the axle shaft looks the same to me, I have heard that the part that connects to the hub is weaker on the manual hub axles but I don't do anything too extreme with mine so I doubt I'll ever have to worry about breaking one
