Pulling the green fuse (disable VSC)

My other toyota was a '97 avalon. I drove that car for a very long time. The ABS was defective - you could not get much out of those dual-piston brakes. A well-known problem for that year.

The avalon did have a "trac off" button. It got pushed, every time i started the car. The damn thing almost killed me once. I pulled out from a stop on a busy road, hit a little gravel with a front tire and the !@#$%^&*(!! engine shut down, leaving me smiling at a semi. Of all the STUPID...

Today I drove the 4runner on the ice, for the first time. I see toyota realized, nor corrected their error. The low gearing somehow resulted in pulling hard in both directions when traction was lost (momentarily) from a stop. The computer proved it was the boss, again and again, by overruling me and killing power from the engine. The ABS clicked away - presumably negating my efforts on the brake pedal, as well.

I do not want to start a debate. If the truck is smarter than I, why does it have a steering wheel? Never mind...

I want to know if anyone has actually pulled the green (ABS) fuse and retaken control of their vehicle?

I'm curious too. I can easily live without ABS if it means turning off the VSC permanently.

I had that happen with no power thing a few times now and wondered WTF is going on. At least I now know what it was.

I think if the fuse thing doesn't work I'll look into the bagel mod if it works on the 01's.

I dont see why the fuse wouldnt. If you fellows want to.go that way. I seen folks pull their ABS before and just use it as standard braking in Tocumas..

Test it and let us know how it goes. May pop your CEL light on.

Post your results. We are eagerly waiting your results.

Nobody wants to be the first..:] Where is you sense of adventure.

What do you think going to happen when you pull the fuse?

You can test it if you want to and I am sure you wouldn't be the only person to pull the fuses. I personally, dont mind the abs and VSC etc. As they are safety features of the vehicle. :]

Yes make sure you do this in area where nobody is around. Safety first.

interesting, I drive on ice and gravel all the time and have not experienced the computer killing the engine when I loose traction....am I missing something, is this only after 2000

Ive also have done the TBU and have not experienced problems with the ABS as some people have said they do after the TBU

Maybe my ABS system isn't working and ive never noticed...I have no lights saying otherwise

Mine's a '98 with no VSC but has ABS. Now I'm wondering if the bizarre engine cut off I've experienced a couple of times in weird circumstances is from the ABS.

ABS modulates that brakes to prevent wheel lockups (so you don't have to "think" just press as hard as you can!). Throttle is left to user input but who throttles during braking on a 4Runner (Porsche maybe?).

VSC and TRAC are what throttle the engine to control slippage and traction.

Get it straight everyone!

VSC and TRAC are only for 2001 and 2002

Pulled the green fuse today. What happened? NOTHING

The ABS and the two trac lights came on, as might be expected.

This is not for everyone. But if you prefer to be in complete and UNDISPUTED control of your vehicle; to be able to do doughnuts on icy parking lots (if that turns you on) then this may well be the way to go.

Thank you very much, just the same, papa-san Toyota, but I will drive

We are glad you are happy. It just makes our day to see you happy.

What did you expect would happen when you pulled the ABS fuse??

Fireworks, sparks flying. Your brakes not work? Some people been pulling that fuse since ABS was first available. ;-)
