Could it be a clogged up cat??? I tried to drive it home, but going up a hill shortly out of the parking lot is started struggling hard, cel flashing, and backfiring in the engine bay. My wife was following behind and said it wasn't smoking from the tailpipe. I looked under the hood and there was a bit of smoke, faint, coming from behind the engine near the firewall.

Could be a plugged fuel filter. Could be alot of things.

[ spark plugs, wiring, coils, fuel filter, fuel line Plugged fuel filter screen on fuel, bad fuel pump, injectors]

Your going to have to do some troubleshooting to eliminate the possibilities. :]

I've been guilty of throwing parts at problems myself.

Reset the CEL, swap the position of the one know good coil pack on cylinder #3 with either the coil pack on cylinder #1 or cylinder #5 and see if the misfires change. If nothing changes, it's not the coil packs. The wires will be harder to swap because they are different lengths. If you have a friend that also owns a 3rd Gen, maybe you could borrow a couple of his wires to eliminate the possibility of a double spark plug wire failure. Like I said earlier, I find this highly unlikely that 2 wires would fail at the same exact moment.
This is the correct answer. I suspect after 202K miles, your plug wires or coil are shot. Once they warm up and expand, and you apply a load to the engine, a gap opens somewhere and bada bing bada boom, you got a spark miss. Spark miss means the fuel injected doesn't get burned that cycle, which loads the converter and you get a bad case of the gas smells.

You got air, you got fuel, you have a problem with fire. Process of elimination. swap coils, swap wires, see if it moves around. Get it warm, do a brake torque in the driveway (press brake pedal hard, and give it a good amount of gas until the vehicle wants to move). This will usually cause the miss to occur and make it more apparent where it is.

Changed the plugs, see attached pic, and cleaned the MAF sensor and still idling rough. Didn't drive it around and didn't get a CEL, so I assume the misfires are still in the same places. I'm going to have it towed to my buddy's shop and let him try to diagnose it on Monday. Worth noting though the rubber wrapped around the plug that came out of the #4 cylinder. Could this point to a bad plug wire?

The spark plugs have a lot of carbon build up which is in line with all your symptoms rich fuel mixture écu compensating for a lean condition. Taking to the shop is a good idea. please post when it's fixed to help others. Good luck.

Do you remember which plugs came out of cylinders 2 and 4? The one farthest to the left really looks fouled.

The one on the far left did come out if 2. The one with the black rubber wrapped around it came out of 4.

Update:

Quick update. I had some time today, so I ran over to the shop and tried my luck. I cranked it up and it idled fine for about 20 seconds, then started missing but no CEL. I decided to swap the plug wires out for new NGK's since they were only $35 from Amazon. I had purchased some cheap Coil Packs that got good reviews, but decided to change one bit at a time in hopes of properly id'ing the issue. Swapped out the plug wires, fired her up, and all is good. I drove it around about 4 miles or so and got the engine up to temp. It drove perfectly normal and showed no signs of missing. I had to head back to work, but I'll swing by this evening and drive her home. If all is good, she'll be my DD again. I'll likely hang on to the coil's, just in case. I'll post back periodically just to check in. Thanks to all of you who helped me.

Good to hear. You have to like those cheap but effective fixes. You did replace the plugs as well?

I still think it's weird 2 wires went bad at the same time but it appears maybe that was the case.

Given the possibility that they are original, who knows. Or more likely that AZ misread the code. That I can vouch happens more often than not. But as long as the OP is riding well now, so it goes.

Just wanted to update real quick. It's been a week now, and a couple hundred miles, and everything is still fine with the rig. I'll report back if something changes, but it seems the wires were the culprit.
