Talking Opinions on skid plates? wife threw away stock skids. Oh darn

Gentlemen, my wife threw out my stock skids this week when the trash ran lol so guess who gets to buy some skids now? This guy!

Thoughts on skids? What's your set up and how do you like them? Looking for recommendations, budget minded would be great but she trashed them so I'll guilt her into it.

Thinking about the coastal off road set

I’ve been super happy with my savage skids. The two piece design matches the stock lines and it’s easy to take one down for oil changes. I’ve nailed some rocks with them before too and they do their job.

I bought the coastal weld together set in 1/8” to save some weight. Oh man first time out I hit a rock that I guess was a little higher than expected. It bent the front skid so bad that it compressed it downward costing me about 4” of ground clearance for the rest of the day. The next day I had to use my bottle jack to bend it back into place, and that’s when I realized that 1/8” is pretty weak for a skid plate.

All of that is to say if you go coastal get the 3/16”.

Also I don’t know if all skid plates do this, but coastal requires you to mount it using two of the bolts that bolt your steering rack in place. It’s kind of annoying because I hate unbolting my rack in general and now I have to do it every time I want to do any work to the truck.

All that said, I saved a bunch of money doing the weld it myself kit, and next time I have them off I plan to reinforce the front skid with some more steel.

I've nailed more rocks with my Savage skids then most guys running them combined. I've only had to take them off once to straighten them. I have the older style without the holes so I can't comment on the new ones strength but the ones I have are as tough as skids get. My wheeling buddies can't believe they're still pretty much straight. lol

I've got the newer style with the holes. Can confirm they are quite strong!
I couldn't be happier with mine.

I've got a set of their sliders, built good enough. At the end of the day a skid plate is just a piece of metal, as long as it bolts on you're good.

You and your wife must have a fantastic marriage based on guilt.

Plenty of people have marriages based on worst things.

If you don't off-road, I would say just get another set of of stock skids.

I like the stock design because it completely surrounds the radiator, unlike RCI's skid.

I do go off-road but not super extreme in this rig as it's more of a daily than a rock crawler for me so it makes sense to get some skids and sliders. It'll get taken on gold mountain and other trails in the san bernardino mountains and calico so protection would be nice.
