Limited Multi-mode transfer case cheat sheet

I made a cheat sheet explaining the confusing transfer case in the Limited, since I got tired of re-explaining it when the wifey or friends are going off road.

For example, why pressing the 4WD button is actually AWD... And why 4WD is ok to use on pavement but 4HI-L isn't, or the difference between H4L and L4L...

Figured I would post it and see if anyone else finds it useful! Printable PDF is attached to the post below. Suggestions for improvements are welcome.

Handy chart!

Also not just limiteds, all 2001-02 4x4s are multimode. Personally I think it's underrated by the conventional wisdom on this forum.

Great chart. Thanks for putting this together.
Good reminder for us all as we are into winter now. I might have to print it and leave it in the car for my wife lol.

Agreed. A major leap forward in traction options. I retrofit a 2000 VF3AM into my '97 auto SR5. That multimode option is sweet. It's not too different from the locking centre diff on my 80 series (after ditching the viscous coupler in favour of the push-button centre locking diff),

Currently replacing the auto tranny with a 5-speed from a 2000 Taco, so it'll be one of just a handful of manual/multimode rigs out there.

I really pondered putting a multi-mode on my 5-spd '99 when I did the transfer case doubler. But I got paranoid that it would all stack up too long and I'd be into the gas tank. And I happened to find two nice donor J-shifts before I found a multimode for mock-up purposes.

My 2000 came with a little transmission operating guide card in a pouch on the driver's side visor. This is a little more clearly described, though. I like the J-shift configuration but I came from a 2nd gen and have no experience with other 3rd gen versions.

You are right. You would not be able to fit the Doubler with the stock fuel tank and Multi-Mode. I REALLY want to do a doubler on my rig, but the fuel tank issue is the biggest hurdle to overcome. You can run a Ford 19 gallon tank in the rear, but that's a lot of work for the same amount of fuel as the stock tank.

The NWF Eco-crawler I'm using is a couple of inches shorter than the Marlin Taco-box, but still, it's 6 1/2(ish) inches longer, and the multimodes have the actuator sticking out of the back end of the case toward the tank.

I have a tank back where the spare used to be, but it's an aux tank, there to double the range, not flatten the belly/make room for drivetrain shens.
