I am liking the idea of the larger oil filters. How much more oil is needed??

I've used tundra filters and buy a 5 qt jug plus an extra and I'd use the whole jug and about 1/3 to 1/2 quart. You know 3.4L to 4.7L...

It's negligible. The standard 5L oil jugs fill our engines perfectly.

Does the filter "Meet or Exceed OEM specification "? That's the important detail. Napa filter is a rebadged Wix that "Meet or Exceed OEM specification ".

Avoid filters that promise High Quality. Whose high quality? "Meet or Exceed OEM specification " is the only spec that matters.

Avoid Fram.

I find it interesting you're discarding the thought of using OEM and are buying the Bosch because of their claims about their filters. Whose to say the Bosch folks aren't full of shit? What's backing up their claims about what their filter can do?

A guy did a tear down comparison of a bunch of different brand oil filters a while back. Here's what he said about the OEM filters:

Here is the Toyota OEM. The biggest filter in the pack. When set side to side with other filters its about an 1 inch to 1 1/2 taller than the other filters. This by far has the most paper filter on it. The paper is very different from the others. It soft yet dense with volume. It also has a plastic seal seal on it before us. Very fancy!

This was his conclusion:

So after opening up all these filters and seeing with my own eyes what did I conclude? Dont buy fram or pennzoil. K&N and Mobil1 is NOT worth the $10. STP is the same thing as the high performance advertise oil fitlers, but at 5 bucks which came out to the biggest oil shocker for me. AcDelco is average maybe less than average. Bosch(Purolator) is a solid design and great for its price. Toyota OEM is a great filter. I bought a case of 10 for 5 bucks each at Twos R Us. You cannot go wrong with oem. TRD for 14 bucks and fancy paper material is unknown to me. Unless I have a crazy rev happy engine I would not spend 14 bucks on an oil filter. Maybe Im just cheap.
If you guys have anymore questions on what else to look for on these filters before I throw them all away feel free to ask away. Hate to throw away 70 bucks in unused oil filters.

Here's a link to the oil filter comparison experiment: Oil Filter Exposed | MR2 SpyderChat
The pictures aren't clear because of the photobucket website BS.

A 7500 mile oil change interval doesn't require a special filter. If an OCI of 7500 miles was pushing the limits of oil filters, there'd be people blowing up engines left and right. There's so many people who abuse the crap out of their vehicles and either don't ever change the oil or maybe do it every 10-20k.

A friend of mine a very long time ago who was a paid mechanic advised me to always buy OEM oil filters and I followed his advice and have always bought OEM filters for my vehicles. Anyway, I've blabbed enough. Good luck with your Bosch filters.

The best oil filter is a reputable brand that is changed at an appropriate interval. Once in use.. they're all kinda the same.

The OEM filter has changed design a few times since the early 90s. The filter they sold you in 1999 is not the filter they sell today. I'd argue the older ones were better, and more similar in design to the Wix or Bosch filters (aside from media material). I believe the old part number was 90915-20004. Made in Japan too.

Similar to the supposed OEM radiators for $120 bucks, Toyota needs to sell something under their brand to compete with the aftermarkets. For every 50 Taiwan Denso rads that are sold they might sell 1 Japanese Denso rad.

The OEM oil filters are small enough and sold in enough quantities to justify higher quality IMO. I use them and they do the job.

The thing to consider too is how is the filter bypassed?
And how relevant it that spring holding that filter in a closed loop. Filter media could be dirty or be too restrictive making the filter bypassed and flowing unfiltered dirty oil back into the engine.
There has to be a happy medium between the filter media and it's bypass spring.
Fram is the worst with cardboard filter ends and a bymetalic flat steel for a spring.
I put my money on toyota, wix/napa and k&n.

One thing that the OEM filter has that I have not found on aftermarket filter: An actual o-ring. The rest are square 'o-rings' that don't seal as easily (require more torque on the filter). That alone is enough to use the OEM filter (oh, and the o-ring is pre-lubed).

If I don't have an OEM, I generally run Purolator or Bosch, based on previous experiences and research.
