I am thinking about putting it the wife van. As my in laws really enjoy theirs. As my wife looses her heat quickly. If your rig doesn't have the keyless entry and your after it. That might be the way to go. Well it's just a thought anyhow.

If the answer is no. I would call a local Toyota dealership and they can verify with your VIN. If you have keyless entry or not

3 of my 5 do not have this. So its quite possible you do not have it or you may.

Might be a good first step. As if you do not have the module. Those FOBS will never program.

Many vehicles have only one wiring harness. It has the wiring for all available options. If those options are not installed the plugs for them are still there.

I just wonder if the modules your pictures show (above) have a plug (wiring) in vehicles not endowed with remote lock/unlock?

If so, all I would need to do is to find a module...

Your rig is a 2001 or 2002 correct?

I believe they changed them in the later years. My photos are on a 1998 and I think they may have even dropped the stickers in the later years as well. :-( I think it went to the driver side kick panel instead of under the seats as we had a major change in the wiring in 1999 with the creation of the multiplex communication system.

I discovered this after I posted these photos as I have the pre 1999 and a 2001 in my fleet.

However, your thinking is correct. If your truck has the wiring plugs then the modules would be needed.

However, sometimes other things may be missing like fuses etc relays you name it.
So its not always as easy as it was for the Toyotas in the 1980s when all the trucks had the same wiring harnesses and you could just plug things in and they would work.
:-(

Research will have to be done and lots of things verified before I would say it would work.

I was bummed when I found out they changed the harnesses and left things out to save money. That all changed in Toyotas in the 1990s.

I had a 1998 tocuma sr5 5 speed manual at the time and wanted to add cruise control and my local parts dealer said it cant be done because most of the wiring harnesses didn't have the wires in them anymore. Unless your vehicle came with it.

So sadly, you may not have the plugs and wiring there or have only sections there. The 3rd gen 4 runners had a few different wiring harnesses and they are not the same from 1996 thru 2002. 1996 thru 1998 similar. 1999 thru 2002 similar but not exact.

Yeah - it's a 2001 sr5 2x4

I can't help but wonder how you know all this. Are you a line mechanic at a toyota dealership?

Another guy posted a link to a features list and there I saw only the limited models have remote entry. They were 4x4 only and cost 10k more.

My "rig" in purring now - still waiting for the other shoe to drop with the weird noise and the screaming on freezing mornings but other than that it's going good.

I was looking for a suv type vehicle for a while. I liked the sequoia but the fuel use and the NASTY thing with the air pump scared me off. I'm allergic to gm vehicles - never had a single one that was worth a (!). So I bought this truck. I really don't like the dinky interior but if it is as reliable and immortal as they say, I guess I can tolerate it.

And... so it goes. Thanks for sharing what you know

I am a hobby mechanic that have owned Toyotas for almost 30 years and started working on them when I was 14 years old.

We do have many users on here that are daily mechanics. Not me though. Its just a hobby.

I own 5 of the 3rd gens.

Anyhow. Your harnesses and locations will have to be verified.

I am suspecting your rig will not have the plugs.

I will look at my 2001 and see if it was moved or not. I thinking it was but that will tell me for sure.

Similarly frustrating, possibly more, we have a vehicle (not a T4R) where the remote lock/unlock works sometimes. Not often.
We are now Neanderthals and use the actual key to unlock the door(s).
Rockin it old school.

Probably have some broken wires in your drivers door or tailgate under the boot.

Most of mine are key only no fob. ;)

I did look no stickers on my 01 sport and no module under my seat. Maybe another user can confirm this. I am thinking it went under the driver side kick panel now. However, not 100% on that location.

Lok under the drivers seat. If there is a black box, I think that is the security system. I know that's what it is on my 1998, so it might be moved to inside the dash for your year. If you have the box, you should have the security system. Correct me if I am wrong, I don't think the security system was standard on SR5s

Unfortunately not all sr5 have the security system. Actually none of mine do except the limited and my sport.

I believe it's an add on feature in the 1996 through 1998. From what I found out thus far.

The Sr5 package itself has a default set features. Like tach. Power windows, power locks.

Your system is exactly like mine RS3000 if its dealer installed [ 1998]

This is why we have 2 different fobs on the 3rd gen spectrum.

I think the change went down in 1999 but I am not 100% sure on that.

for anyone still wondering, you can check what system you have/if you have one or not by going on the toyota owners website and making an account with your VIN.

Mine came from the previous owner with just a plain key but according to my specs, "V3 V.I.P.-RS3000 SECURITY SYSTEM" was installed at the port by Toyota. So, hopefully I can program a new fob without issues. just have to figure out black or gray...

Yup or by checking with your local dealer.

The problem comes in when things get removed or changed.

You can also goto a local dealer with your title and get the builds sheets as well. Comes in handy if you need the key code provided PO didn't rekey the rig.

So which year is yours?
