Smile I ended up replacing my starter.

Thanks everyone for your input to my starting problems. Just wanted to leave a resolution to my issue for others to see.

If yours does the same thing (clicks one or many times then starts like no problem) then it needs Just these:

Yes the starter has to come out, not that tough really like everyone makes it seem, yet far cheaper and w/b more reliable than most after market starters.

we had this plague in our outback. we changed out everything from the starter relay to the cable terminators, cleaned everything very thoroughly to ensure good contact... and it was the starter. so the solenoid repair kit that @jgue467 alludes to above may be useful for yours. a mechanic we discussed this with, said sometimes the starter develops dead spots where contact isn't exactly great. that might be a factor here... who knows.

What are other symptoms?
Voltage readings?

My Saturn when I had a bad starter didn’t make a klick. So after replacing the ignition switch and the clutch safety interlock switch and still had the problem I replaced the starter and problem went away.

The plunger after thousands of repeated beatings against the copper contacts wins by flatting the copper so much it does not make sufficient contact to pass enough current, hence the "click". Then after trying again and again, the plunger moves the copper contact just enough for sufficient current to pass to the starter. A new contact and your're back in business for quite some time.

Mine has survived to 320K but I've helped 2 other buddies change the contacts (actually it's only 1 contact that wears but may as well change both)....Luck all.

Hmmm, I guess Ol' Timmy was right on this one. I reckon I sometimes get lucky with my Toyota forum diagnosis. OP, glad you got it fixed and you're rig is back on the road.

Good job fixing the problem on your own. You saved yourself lots of money turning your own wrenches. Next time though, consider just swapping out the contacts and plunger. If you starter was the original Denso, it's far superior to any other aftermarket crap that auto parts stores sell. If you got a remanned Denso, then you did good.

97 4Runner SR5, Automatic

I have a similar issue. I already changed the starter and starter relay, to a new one. I checked the battery it's 12.14v output. All lights works, radio works. When I try to start it, you hear one click, NO crank ( at all), NO multiple clicking sound like battery is dying but you hear humming when holding the ignition to start. I tried moving the vehicle and tried to start it again ( nada). I tried starting I on neutral, nothing. The 4runner was just working 4 hours ago, I came home Parked it and it won't start anymore. Any thoughts? Thank you for your expert assistance or knowledge to share 🙂 at this point I hit rock bottom coz I have no idea what else to check 🤷

Replace the starter (OEM or Denso reman) or rebuild it yourself (new solenoid and contacts. Normal stuff...

Edit... it may still just be intermittent - try the key to START for 1-2 seconds at a time multiple times until the starter spins. You basically are trying to find a spot where the starter contacts and solenoid have enough contact to run the starter (the solenoid spins a bit each time it is actuated).
