Just sold my 2000 Highlander edition that I have had since 2005 and picked up a 2017 GX460. Still love 4Runners but the prices of new and "gently used" ones are crazy. The GX was priced cheaper than an equivalent year Limited but is just in a whole other class of comfort.
Would have held onto my 4Runner but it gave me a strawberry milkshake scare. Took my usual drive to pick up the kids from school but noticed as I was driving that the transmission was slipping. Pulled into a parking lot and stopped, looked under the front of the truck and saw some strawberry milkshake on the ground. Had the wife pick me up and followed a red trail of fluid back to my driveway where there was a huge red puddle of fluid. Had the truck towed to a shop, had them flush the coolant system and the transmission and replace the radiator. Mechanic said when he pulled the transmission pan that it was dry with no fluid(he was expecting milkshake). Long story short, he called me and said truck was good, he drove it 25 miles, shifted good, holding good temperature, trans fluid and coolant both looked good, same color as when he put them in. I drove it for another 2 weeks and 200 miles with no issues. At this point my wife was not trusting the 4Runner and it was time to move on. Love the GX, wish the 4Runner had a V8, torque makes so much difference, only downside is the fuel economy but its actually not that much worse than my 3rd gen fatlip.
