Thoughts on plasti dipping

I have the original 2002 4runner rims and I’m getting some kickass tires for the rims but I know they would probably look better with something other than the original rims. I don’t want to go out and buy $500 worth of new rims, so I looked into plasti dipping. Thoughts?

Pastidipping/wrapping screams "look at me, I want to be authentic but refuse to do it right, soon you shall see my plasti dip peel and I won't retouch it because I only fix things once."

I personally just keep the rims clean. I not sure how any kind of dip or paint would hold up to tire changes. However, I do keep everything mostly stock too.

Original rims always look best to me. Or rims from a similar style/year (like a 1st gen Tundra).

plastidip is a great way to test the waters before spending crazy amounts of money on anything.

I have my hood plastidipped black to see if I want it painted, or monstalined, or back to my normal color.

I have dipped entire vehicles (my charger, a WRX and an Infiniti), they looked freakin awesome. and I would do it again no problem.

its about as easy as can be. and if you mess it up, just peel it off and try again.

Kids around my MO paint their rims with Peel Coat. It seems to look decent for a while.

I have a hood dipped (cheap protection for a hood known to chip and rust). It's lasted a year and is starting to peel pretty bad. Has always collected dirt like crazy/looked dirty and it doesn't clean real well. I'll be spending the money for actual PPF this time around, should have just done it last time but opted to waste ~4 cans of plastidip.

I doubt I'll ever use the stuff again. Seems like a cheap fix, but it's just a very short term thing that only looks good for the first week or two.

Better to learn how to actually paint and spend the money there.

I've had success on both sets of 4r rims I've dipped. Stock are notorious for corrosion so a quick sand and dip worked great for me.

Plastidip is best left in 2013. Glad that trend is over.

I just plasti dipped my rims because they wouldnt clean up as nicely as I hoped. So far its only been about 500 miles and they still look good. Ive seen guys sand their rims down and paint them. I think that is the best option because the paint will hold a lot better.

A $5 can of plastic dip looks a whole lot better than scuffed and stained stock wheels, IMO.
