Noise when putting it in drive

I would say about 90% of the time I put my 4Runner into drive, and drive about 10-15 feet I hear this noise from under the truck. It kind sounds like a tire rubbing or something like that, but it's not. If i start it and go to reverse it won't do it, but once I go to drive it does it. If I have already driven, then gone into park, and back into drive it will not do it, only when you have just started it. It doesn't sound like gears, it sounds like some sort of creaking or rubbing noise. Anybody know what this is??

It could be the ABS pump doing its self-check. It needs the brakes to be released before it can do that.

ABS pump makes a kind of buzz moan sort of sound a half a second or so after you let off the brake pedal.

Drove my 99 for 15 years and never noticed it. Bought a 98 and was like what's that odd sound?

99 has lots more insulation in the engine bay than the 98.

What about if it's facing downhill on a driveway or something and you put it in to neutral and let it roll? The reason I ask is I had a chatter that happened unde the same circumstances and it turned out to be leaking rear axle seals. The brake shoes would grab and chatter but only on initial start up and not in reverse. Eventually all that oil causes the material on the shoes to swell and they don't want to let go.

That doesn’t make the noise. Only in drive.

I suspect you could pull the ABS relay under the hood and see if the noise stops.

I’m having the same exact issue with my 99 and this is all I can find online in relation to it. Did you ever figure it out?

My 99 4runner and my 01 Corolla makes the same noise and have been wondering what that noise was forever! I knew it had to do something with the brakes, but had no idea it was the abs pump. Make sense now that I can hear it on the passenger side.
