Auto window up/down

My '97 has the drivers window auto up/down. It doesn't work. I have to hold the switch. Any suggestions on how to make it work?

It's likely the switch. From a 2000 EWD description:
8. AUTO DOWN OPERATION (DRIVER’S WINDOW)
With the ignition SW on and with the auto SW of the power window master SW in DOWN position, current flowing to
TERMINAL (A) 10 of the power window master SW to TERMINAL (A) 2 to TERMINAL 2 of the power window motor front LH
to TERMINAL 1 to TERMINAL (A)1 of the power window master SW to TERMINAL (A) 4 to GROUND, causing the motor to
rotate towards the down side. Then the solenoid in the power window master SW is activated and it locks the auto SW being
pushed, causing the motor to continue to rotate in auto down operation. When the window has completely descended, the
current flow between TERMINAL (A) 1 of the power window master SW and TERMINAL (A) 4 increases. As a result, the
solenoid stops operating, the auto SW turns off and flow from TERMINAL (A) 10 of the power window master SW to
TERMINAL (A)
2 is cut off, stopping the motor so that auto stop occurs.

10. AUTO UP OPERATION (DRIVER’S WINDOW)
With the ignition SW on and with the auto SW of the power window master SW in UP position, current flowing to TERMINAL
(A) 10 of the power window master SW to TERMINAL (A) 1 to TERMINAL 1 of the power window motor front LH to
TERMINAL 2 to TERMINAL (A) 2 of the power window master SW to TERMINAL (A) 4 to GROUND, causing the motor to
rotate towards the up side. Then the solenoid in the power window master SW is activated and it locks the auto SW being
pulled, causing the motor to continue to rotate in auto up operation. When the window has completely descended, the
current flow between TERMINAL (A) 2 of the power window master SW and TERMINAL (A) 4 increases. As a result, the
solenoid stops operating, the auto SW turns off and flow from TERMINAL (A) 10 of the power window master SW to
TERMINAL (A)
1 is cut off, stopping the motor so that auto stop occurs

Hey I've had this happen with a number of my cars that have had higher mileage or were subjected to more dirt/dust and I've on occasion had success in cleaning the contacts but it's hit and miss.

On my 97 I gave up on cleaning it (plus it was 340k miles old at the time) and just bought a new switch unit: for the price it was the best way to go and least time requirements:

Mostly if the switches test out good. It could be a broken wire that breaks in the door jam. Those wires flex every time the door is opened and closed. The drivers door and the hatch tailgate are mostly the first areas to break. However, all doors will in time.

If I read correct, that the switch will work if you hold it down. If that is true then you have power to the switch and is most likely the switch.
Do other windows operate. does the auto up down work on pass side ?

All of the windows work. It's just the auto up down that doesn't. I don't think the passenger side has the auto up down. Sounds like the switch is bad.
Thanks for the replies.

I got the dancing window now.
so my new to me 2001 started this game yesterday, using auto up, go to put window up, goes up, then back down, then up, then down then stops down. If the window is in the half way down postion, it will go up and stay up using the auto up.

is it the switch ?

I was having the same issue, but it would go auto up, then back down to halfway. The issue was because I switched from manual windows to electric, and when I put the new regulators in I didn’t know about setting the safety feature for auto up. My cousin has had the same issue in a few Lexus’s (Lexi?). This was recommended to me a while back, but I haven’t done it.

Hope it helps, I know how annoying window issues can be.
