Smog question on URD 7th injector kit in California
I just purchased the supercharger and 7th injector kit bundle from URD. Having my mechanic install both and he says he can't install the 7th injector kit because it won't pass smog. Has anyone installed this kit and successfully passed smog? I asked how visible it was if installed, and he says it is very visible.

If it doesn't have a CARB EO number, there is no way it will pass visual inspection in California or any state that adheres to the CARB standards

The supercharger came with a carb number and serial number. Would that do it or would smog look for another set of numbers for the kit?
If I don’t use the kit, what are the other things I can do to reduce pinging? The supercharger was just installed and there is slight pinging which my mechanic said should improve the more I drive it.

You can retard the timing using a standalone fuel management system and also have custom fuel injectors made from RC racing. Neither of those will pass smog, but they are easily removed to smog and then replaced with minimal effort. I did it for years on my SC Tacoma.

The ECU doesn't listen for knock/ping at low RPM, which is why you are hearing it. It will not get better with time, as the ECU never senses the ping/knock.
While technically illegal, you can probably install the 7th injector setup and a smog tech might miss it if the rest of the supercharger system is CARB approved.
Anything else you do to combat knock/ping will have the same issues with CARB.
-Charlie
Edit: You have a 5-speed - so just keep those RPMs up when you are under load!

go get it smogged without and then install. remove every two years, and then reinstall at the appropriate time.

Did I reply in another thread? Anyway, just have it put on and then find the CARB EO# sticker that includes a 7th injector. The smog tech won't know the difference between the URD 7th injector and the dealer installed TRD 7th injector. I know of several people personally that don't even take off the 7th when they smog, it passes every time.

Hey
@ gamefreakgc
, we were chatting about if the 7th injector kit was really necessary on the supercharger thread.
BTW, I went with your guy in Sac to install my supercharger - cool guy and thanks for the recommendation! Unfortunately he didn't want to install the 7th injector for liability issues.
Do you go to a specific place to get smogged?

I do, my buddy that is supercharged with the 7th goes to a place in Orangevale, Star Smog. My very modified engine & exhaust passed visual as well. It is a reputable smog shop though, not one of those "fee" based tuner smog shops. I don't know of any of those, which I might need to go to soon...

Hi everyone,
I'm installing my SC and wondering if the 7th injector kit resolves the ping issues completely? I know the AEM is another option but the 7th injector kit looks like a plug and play option with less hassle.
Thanks!
