2002 Toyota 4Runner 5sp swap
Hey all. I've got an 02 4runner that blew the auto trans going up a hill. I dropped the pan and scooped a bunch of metal out so I figured I would go ahead and commit to dropping a manual in.
I am making a thread to just keep track of the process. It may or may not become informative or useful to others, but someone might find something helpful from it.
As of now, I have removed the auto trans, mounted pedals and drilled the firewall for the master cylinder.
My parts list so far is:
manual transmission from 200 tacoma
pedals
master/slave cylinder
driveshafts
Parts I need to order:
clutch/flywheel
??possibly starter if the auto is not compatible??
transmission xmember mount
output shaft seal
After Christmas I plan to order the remaining parts and put the manual in.
I have not figured out what I am going to do about the wiring but it seems there are some options. I am going to try to maintain the 02 transfer case, but I do have the j-shift from the 00 tacoma.

Auto starter should work just fine. Also the cross member from auto should be fine. You’ll need a master cylinder line. eBay one for 93 Supra. Fits like a glove. I got it on mine. As far as wiring. You could trick the auto Ecu into neutral for mean time. But you’ll have check engine light. I don’t recall since it’s been long time. But 02 4runner should be plug and play with manual ecu. So I think a m/t ecu out of 2000 4runnee would be plug and play. I could be wrong. Again, been a while since something like this came up here.

I managed to grab the lines which was nice. I’ve got them run, just need to bolt the trans up.
The auto X-member works, just need to get the manual mount.
As far as ecu, I was told 00-03 Tacoma ecu would hook right up.
I’m mostly concerned with how I’ll retain the 02 transfer case.

He needs a Tacoma DBW MT ECU. From '01-'04 or something. I don't have the PN for that though, but a search should find it.

It seems to me that an ECU for a vehicle with a drive-by-wire throttle body - which to my knowledge is any 5VZ-FE 2001 and later - would differ significantly in its coding from an earlier my-foot-moves-the-throttle-plate engine.
And this is irrespective of whether the engine is mated to an automatic or a manual. Thus, the recommendation for a 2001 or later Tacoma ECU makes sense.

If you want to clear the check engine for CA emissions, you need a 2003 or 2004 MT Tacoma ECM. They are getting hard to find.
That's what I had to do on mine. Check out Tylers build he did a similar one to mine. I did not swap the wire harness. I just jumpered my AT harness and it worked just fine.

I'll give that a look. I just ordered the trans mount and output shaft seal. Just need to decide on what clutch/flywheel to go with. I'm ready to get it mounted up so I can start to tackle the wiring.

I used the LCE dual comp clutch kit.
It's a little aggressive for my driving style. Clutch is very "grabby"
The Marlin clutch wasn't available at the time.
I would go with on of those or the LCE Pro Clutch kit in retrospect.

Your transfer case will mate up just fine with the M/T. You don’t need to do anything special with the wiring, just re-use your auto wiring harness and cap the A/T plugs that are no longer used. That’s exactly what I did on my ‘99 Limited, my multi-mode transfer case works just like it did with an A/T.
Also, just re-use your old driveshafts. The M/T is 1.25” shorter than the A/T, there is enough travel in the slip yoke on the front driveshaft to compress it that much and I just put a 1.25” driveshaft spacer from Low Range Offroad on the rear driveshaft.
Look at my build thread for more info.

I am going to have a bunch of parts left over from my swap. I am pretty sure I will have all the wiring harnesses and 5-speed ECU from a '99. I will also probably have the master and slave cylinders and possibly a crossmember and maybe more stuff.
I should know for sure after Christmas.

I think I am going to pick up this media blaster from Harbor Freight and clean up the r150f a little more.
Portable Abrasive Blaster Kit
Waiting on a few parts to get here and wouldn't mind having it look a little better.

Update coming soon. Everything is pretty much buttoned up. Just waiting on some MT-90 to get here and need to wire up the neutral override.

Well I’ve been stumped for a day or so. Trying to get the dang NSS wired so I can start it up.
I can’t find the proper wiring diagram for an 02 anywhere.
I’ve got two plugs un used and I’m not sure which is which.
Does anyone happen to know what wires to jump?
