Welcome to T4R.org, a fantastic forum as you might already know.

Curious, what was the motivation for the switch? I'd likely be in a Tacoma if I didn't have two little ones...

I switched because the 4Runner is more useful for me. I need the space for my two niece and brother dog in the back when we go hiking or camping.

Good luck with the new rig.

Replacing the heater core is - by far - the most PITA job I’ve done on the 4Runner. Total dash removal required.

While you're in there, get the Lower ball joints knocked out too. Between those (and their bolts) and the radiator, you're addressing the biggest issues that can stop you in your tracks.

And from personal experience, doing all the control arm bushings makes a MASSIVE difference in ride quality.

Good luck with your new ride.

1999 4Runner "Must Do" List

It's now 2024, and I also just purchased a '99 4Runner Limited. I had the timing belt/water pump replaced as there was no history on it. The front wheel bearings were bad, and according to the mechanic, seized into the knuckles. He replaced the entire spindle assembly. The rear differential carrier bearings are going, and so that will be rebuilt. The heater blend door Bowden cable is seizing...still working on what to do about that. I also had the radiator replaced. Shocks and bushings will be replaced when the rear differential is rebuilt. It has 248k miles on it. What else should I be worried about?

Lower ball joints if they weren’t replaced during the spindle assembly install.

Those go and could destroy all of the work you’ve already done. Easy swap, shouldn’t take more than an hour.
